People like to describe rough, tough traditional 4x4s using terms like ‘bullet-proof’ and even ‘bomb-proof.’ Normally, of course, you wouldn’t want to take that too literally.

But you would in the Range Rover Sentinel. A version of the Autobiography model, it’s been worked over by Jag Land Rover’s SVO operation – and now you can lay into it with guns, grenades, armour-piercing incendiary rounds or 15 kilos of TNT without laying a finger on the people inside.

It’ll shrug off the less direct approach, too, with a self-sealing petrol tank and anti-tamper exhaust. There’s a fire-suppression system under the bonnet, and you can communicate with those outside via a loudspeaker – or, if all you want them to do is get out of your way, a siren.

Split-charge electrics juiced by twin batteries mean you’re that much less likely to be stranded in the firing line, and the 20” split-rim wheels will let you keep on driving even if the rubberware around them has been blown to smithereens.

The Sentinel’s passenger compartment is cloaked in six-piece armour, and the windows are blacked out and, obviously, bullet-proof.

Helping you leg it from danger is a new engine to the Range Rover line-up, in the shape of the 335bhp 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine from the Jaguar F-Type. The ZF eight-speed auto box, on the other hand, is anything but new in this vehicle.

How much does this all cost? Well, how much is your life worth? If the answer is ‘less than €400,000 (around £295,000),’ you won’t be buying one.

That figure doesn’t just buy you a car, because it also includes specialised training for your chauffeur and once-a-year maintenance visits by Land Rover technicians. They’ll have a way to go in most cases, because Land Rover expects most sales to come from abroad. They’ve obviously seen how it gets in Paris at rush hour.
