A cameraman has just shared photos of the Northern Lights, lunar and solar eclipses and our distant galaxies.

Norwegian Arild Heitmann spent two hours in a freezing river to get this shot of the Northern Lights.

The image were submitted as part of the Astronomy Photographer of the Year contest, last night won by France’s Luc Jamet.

Judges said Jamet’s picture, of a solar eclipse over Sassendalen, a valley on the Norwegian Arctic island Spitsbergen, was “a wonderful composition”.
