Michael Essien:
The Bison ensured that a generation of Ghanaians fell in love with Chelsea during his nine-year stint with the West London heavyweights. Essien was a beautiful combination of power and dynamism in the heart of the park, and delighted in lashing powerful shots at goal. He was present for the Champions League victory in 2012, and played his part in two Premier League triumphs.
Nwankwo Kanu:
Africa has produced few players more mesmerising than Kanu, who appeared to be capable of almost anything with the ball at his feet. He was remarkably agile for such a big forward, while his languid style belied an incredible technical prowess and a creative mind. The two-time African Footballer of the Year won the EPL twice with Arsenal, in 2002 and 2004.
John Obi Mikel:
Some may argue that Mikel is yet to realise his potential—and a case can be made for this—but no one can deny the Nigerian’s place as one of the most decorated African players of his generation. The midfielder has won two EPL titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League during his time with Chelsea, while he also featured in the Europa League victory in 2013. Can he add to his impressive haul this season?
Kolo Toure:
The current Liverpool defender arrived in England in 2002 in a £150,000 transfer from ASEC Mimosas and remains, to this day, one of Arsene Wenger’s greatest-ever signings. He certainly ranks among the greatest bargains secured by a Premier League side. Toure was a key figure in Arsenal’s Invincibles side, and is a two-time EPL champion, lifting the trophy once with the Gunners and, eight years later, with Manchester City.
Didier Drogba:
The Cote d’Ivoire legend enjoys almost god-like status in his homeland, and even after his departure, there remains a proliferation of Chelsea fans in the tiny West African nation. Indeed, the forward became a global superstar at Stamford Bridge, winning four Premier League titles during his time with the Pensioners. His goals settled a handful of FA Cup finals, while he was the chief protagonist as Chelsea won the Champions League in 2012.
Abdul Rahman Baba?:
The new boy on the block! Baba may be only one game into his career at Chelsea, but there are already signs that the young Ghanaian left-back can be a key figure for Jose Mourinho’s side. There were some who argued that a move to Stamford Bridge at such an early age would not be a wise idea for the full-back, but Baba has at least ensured that one Black Star features for a truly elite side. Can he write a legacy as glittering as the other African stars on this list?
