Not a few Nigerians were taken aback on Monday when news broke that no fewer than 35 Senators had collected $50,000 each as Sallah gift to impeach Senate President, Bukola Saraki, when they resume plenary next week.

Saraki appeared before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, on Tuesday. His appearance followed a 13-count charge preferred against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau over alleged falsification of assets.

Saraki had since emergence as Senate president been out of favour with the leadership of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the party leadership had not hidden its desire to see him out of Senate plum job any time soon.

The alleged doling out of $50,000 each to willing senators to impeach Saraki if it eventually turns out to be true will be the latest push to shove the Senate president aside by those opposed to his emergence.

Clearly, this resort to old habits and underhand tactics, particularly monetary inducement of public officials, in this case senators, by persons linked to the Presidency or APC leadership, in dealing with a perceived political recalcitrant, shows that despite the much touted change the party promised Nigerians, nothing has really changed among.............
