New seismic companies crop up every day so join forums or Facebook groups that talk about that eg "You know you work in seismic when ..."

Offshore Positions:
1. Positioning Engineer or Seismic Navigators or Positioning Specialists or Navigators: monitor the positioning systems during seismic data acquisition using various GPS systems. Maintain positioning in-sea equipment. If you have a Surveying degree or experience in surveying, you can fit in this role.

2. Acquisition Engineers or Observers or Acquisition Specialists: monitor the seismic acquisition system, data recording system and take care of the maintaining the cables and other in-sea equipment.

3. Gun Mechanics or Source Mechanics & Compressor Mechanics: in charge of the seismic sources (airguns) with which we make the sound waves. They are mostly experienced motor mechanics. Job involves moving heavy equipment with hydraulic winches, driving cranes etc.

4. Geophysicists or Data Processors: carry out seismic data processing offshore. It is mostly graduates of Geophysics that I see in this role. Position also exists in data processing centres in the offices of seismic companies.

For those without any experience, look for Trainee Navigators, Trainee Observers and
Trainee Geophysicists positions when you visit some of the websites.

5. Coxwains: Those who drive our small boats. You need experience in driving small boats plus other certifications.

For freelancing:
Geomotive Agency (now part of Atlas): http://seismic.atlasprofessionals.com/
You can start freelancing once you have 2 years experience on the job.

BOSIET & HUET
BOSIET is Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training
HUET is Helicopter Underwater Escape Training.
Remember: you do not need to know how to swim to pass these trainings. In one of the sessions you just need to hold your breath for a few seconds under water. In another, there's a breathing apparatus that you will use to breath when you are under water. There are instructors to tell you what to do so listen to them.

Divers are on standby in the water in case anything happens. The orange suit makes you float so once you leave the helicopter, the only way for you to go is up. Just don't panic! Yes, I have seen very good swimmers panic during the training.

HUET Videos
In some of these videos, they are not wearing the full gear. Full gear includes a floating suit and a breathing device.

Work schedule:
5 wks on, 5 wks off, some companies do 6 wks on, 6 wks off.
If you work as a Seismic Engineer with WesternGeco, you may be required to work in the office as well but their “Specialists” do not work in the office.

Other companies do not have such programme where offshore personnel work in the office too.
More info on company websites.
