Half time at the Vicente Calderon. It has been a highly entertaining clash in the Madrid derby this evening but it is Los Blancos who head into the break with a 1-0 lead over the hosts, Atletico. Goalscoring chances for both sides, but a finished Benzema header and a missed penalty from Griezmann proved to be the key moments of the opening 45. A very interesting second period in store! 43' There shouldn't be too much added time allocated by the referee here as this has pretty much been a free-flowing match apart from the goal and a few fouls here and there. Madrid will probably just look to keep it tight for the next few moments and head into the break with the lead. 42' Substitution-Daniel Carvajal Arbeloa 41' Some worrying scenes for Real Madrid at the moment as Carvajal won't be able to continue after suffering a nasty looking blow to the knee. He actually signals for the stretcher himself before eventually trudging off the pitch to be replaced by the veteran, Alvaro Arbeloa. A blow for Los Blancos, as the former Leverkusen man has been bright tonight. 39' Yellow Card-Ángel Correa 39' Correa looks like a player who is always on the brink of lashing out with a little showing of aggression, and he previously got away with it with that poor challenge on Casemiro. However, he finally goes into the book after hacking away at Ronaldo to break down a Madrid counter. 37' Ronaldo is inching ever closer to overtaking Raul's goalscoring record here, which so far in this game has evaded him. The Ballon d'Or winner stands over a free kick around 35 yards out and steps up to send a stinging strike towards goal, but like his previous attempt, it goes over the bar, with Oblak not particularly troubled. 35' There are the obvious negative ramifications for Atletico if they were to be defeated tonight in that they would be some points behind their city rivals and the champions, Barcelona. However, the mental damage that losses so early in the season against the Clasico duo could do could certainly harm morale for the campaign ahead. 33' Just under 15 minutes to go in the first half at Vicente Calderon and Real Madrid are good value for their 1-0 lead at the moment, but Atletico have still managed to pose a threat, and would be level of Navas hadn't pulled off that super save to deny Griezmann's penalty. Still all to play for! 31' OVER FROM RONALDOOOO! The former Manchester United attacker, who had a very frustrating time in his last Spanish Primera Division match against Malaga, swivels quickly inside the box and finds a yard of space to get the shot away, but his attempt goes high and wide. 29' Correa is a lucky, lucky boy to escape a yellow card, or even possibly a red here as he goes in with his studs up on Casemiro, catching the Brazilian directly on the shin pad. The referee could not have had a better view, but decides it was somehow a fair challenge. Atletico get away with one there. 27' Griezmann looks to latch on to a deflected pass down the right flank and suddenly finds himself in a race against Varane to get the ball. The Madrid defender displays an absolutely tremendous turn of pace to reach there before his compatriot to send possession out for a throw-in. He was taking no prisoners there! 25' Ronaldo collects possession with his back to goal and turns sharply before driving into space through the middle. He shifts the ball on to his left foot and looks to thread an incisive pass down the channel for Benzema, but Gimenez is on hand to make the important, sliding interception. 22' Missed Penalty-Antoine Griezmann PENALTY MISSED FROM GRIEZMANN! The Frenchman steps up and whips the spotkick low towards the bottom corner, only to see his attempt brilliantly palmed away from danger by the excellent Keylor Navas! Los Blancos survive! Still 1-0! 22' Penalty save-Keylor Navas 21' Yellow Card-Sergio Ramos 21' PENALTY TO ATLETICO MADRID! Fernando Torres dashes ahead through the middle but just allows his touch to let him down on the edge of the box. Sergio Ramos collects but a similarly poor touch allows Tiago to get in ahead, forcing the defender to commit the foul inside the box! 19' Some scintillating play on the edge of the Atletico box from Real Madrid at the moment as they look to find an opening to grab another goal. Modric, Ronaldo, and Marcelo are all involved positively but the hosts end up getting a little bit of respite as Oblak comes off his line to claim a cross. 17' Yellow Card-Gabi 17' First booking of the match now and it is a deserved, and predictable one for Gabi, who halts a Real Madrid counterattack by cynically scything down Benzema a few yards inside the centre circle. You would have put your mortgage on the Atletico captain being shown a yellow card tonight; quite the combatant! 15' Correa is looking the most likely candidate to claw Atletico Madrid back into contention here, and seems to be playing with absolutely no fear against his experienced Madrid backline. His latest attempt at goal is a wicked strike from 20 yards which has Navas scrambling across, but which goes the wrong side of the post. 13' Just wide from Correa! The 20-year-old makes an excellent run in behind the Atletico defence into the right channel and receives the ball to feet before drilling a low strike aimed at the bottom left corner. Unfortunately for him, and the hosts, it is dragged just wide. 11' That goal is no less than Real Madrid deserve here, as Benitez has sent his men out from the get-go to play with purpose and intensity, which is exactly what Simeone's outfit are missing. Normally the Argentine can be counted on to keep his teams at the very least solid and organised, but they have allowed their rivals to run over the top of them in this opening 10 minutes. 9' Assist-Daniel Carvajal 9' Goal-Karim Benzema GOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLL FOR REAL MADRID!! LOS BLANCOS TAKE THE LEAD! Carvajal skips beyond Filipe far too easily down the right flank and stands a beauty of a cross into the box for Benzema, who glances a superb header into the top left corner! Poor defending from Atleti! 7' Vital interception from Godin! Carvajal gets into an advanced position down the right wing and sends a teasing cross along the six-yard box, which Benzema looks poised to send into the back of the net, only to be foiled by the Uruguayan, who clears with a last-ditch tackle! 5' Correa pops up in behind the Real Madrid defence and hits the byline before smashing a left-footed strike at goal from the wide angle. Predictably, it doesn't pose much of a problem to Navas and ends it slamming into the side netting. 3' We get our first glimpse of Ronaldo here who is, of course, aiming to become Real Madrid's all-time top goalscorer. The Portuguese gets on the end of a Modric cross to head an attempt at goal, but it ends up flashing harmlessly wide of the right-hand post. 1' We are under way at the Vicente Calderon! The players are making their way to the pitch and we are almost ready for kick-off! |
