Saudi Arabia and the concept of accountability are clearly incompatible. In the midst of on-going, appalling atrocities, the country has recently been appointed to head the UN Human Rights Council, in contradiction of Article 55 of the United Nations Charter, which stresses the importance of universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. Of course, the appointment itself can hardly be considered contentious, given the UN’s penchant for instigating violence in order to sustain itself.
