How To Survive A Deadly Stampede by Nobody: 8:45pm On Sep 29, 2015
A stampede is an act of mass impulse among herd animals or a crowd of people in which the herd collectively begins running with no clear direction or purpose.
Following the recent occurrence near Mecca during the 2015 Hajj Pilgrimage, when two large groups of pilgrims who were on their way to performing the “stoning of the devil” ritual at Jamarat arrived together at a crossroads in Mina, and suffered a stampede resulting to the death of over 717. It is quite necessary that we do consider some preventive measures that will keep us on a safer side as not to become victims of these deadly incidents.
In order to be safeguarded, we first have to examine to examine some events that have the potential of attracting a massive influx of people. Not only the capability of stampede occurring in such gatherings, but they are often targets of terrorist attacks and that’s why we need to be safety conscious at all times. Having political rallies, music festivals, sports games, religious events
When the crowd in these gatherings becomes a crush and your life is under threat, we are going to consider some essential guide to surviving a stampede. This are guides by Crowd Management and Survival Experts
Survival Tips
The first thing tip to surviving a stampede is to prevent it from occurring and it begins with you.
Why say so? “There’s always this perception that if people had just acted rationally they wouldn’t have been crushed to death. Panic didn’t cause this; the failure to manage this event caused this.” There is no better way to be rational than we resolving to be irrespective of the situation surrounding us.
Medical experts have discovered that deaths from human stampedes occur primarily from compressive asphyxiation (also called chest compression) and not trampling. During a deadly stampede, people can even die standing up. The compressive force occurs from both horizontal pushing and vertical stacking. The energy by panicked crowds is usually compared to the energy generated by a running train: once a crowd gets moving it is very hard to stop, and the flow of people could literally sweep you off your feet.
It is interesting to note that the force of only 6 or 7 people pushing in the same direction can generate up to 1000 lbs. of force – enough to bend steel railings and topple brick walls. People die when pressure is applied to their bodies in a front to back direction, causing them not to be able to breath. When pressure is applied to their side, they often survive, probably because their rib cages are protecting their ability to breathe.
The second tip is that the organizers of such event should employ the use of a crowd management services, they must make sure that there is always a mobile clinic should anything go wrong. This because prior to a Stampede happening, anybody can just faint just like the case of a young girl I witnessed in “The Experience Lagos” 2014, a gospel music concert that pulled had 700,000 people in attendance.
The mobile clinic that would have resuscitated her, was long gone when the girl fainted. Therefore, the event managers should always ensure that such services remain at the location till the last person is gone.
Avoiding wearing Slippers at all cost, when attending such events. I understand that due to the number of people that might show up for such gatherings, you will prefer to wear footwear that will expose your feet to maximum air possible. Have you considered that if there is to be a surge, the person right beside you can easily step on the flat rear of your slippers, causing you to stumble? Once you stumble, you can easily fall down and be trampled in a crowd crush.
Tennis shoes are more convenient as these moments, as it also gives your feet a firm grip to the ground. It may also be necessary to consider going with crash helmets to such programs, to prevent your head from being marched upon shod you fall.
When standing, keep your hands up by your chest, like a boxer – it gives you movement and protects your chest, as a matter of self-defense.
The worst scenario is to be pushed by the crowd against an immovable object. Try to stay away from walls, fences or barricades, as the crowd pressure can build up rapidly.
A technique for working your way out of a crush, is called the accordion method. This method is explained on the link below.
