As we celebrate the 55th Independence of Nigeria tomorrow, let’s take a moment to reflect on some of the things we should be extremely proud of as Nigerians.

We have the first African female writer published in English

Professor Flora Nwapa was a great Nigerian writer (novelist), teacher, administrator, and a forerunner of a whole generation of African women writers. Flora Nwapa is best-known for re-creating Igbo life and traditions from a woman's viewpoint. With Efuru (1966) Nwapa became black Africa's first internationally published female novelist in the English language.

Longest Rap Free-Style

Believe it or not, a Nigerian rapper, Chiddy Bang in 2011 made it into the Guiness World Record for being the first rapper with the longest rap freestyle. Chiddy Bang free-styled for 9hrs, 18mins and 22secs at the 2011 MTV O Music Awards. You can check him here on YouTube.

Nigerians live life to the fullest

Nigerians are naturally happy people. We are resilient and make the most of situations. We are also a very hardworking breed and spare no expense when it comes to having fun. As Banky W sang “ain't no party like a Lagos party.

We are entrepreneurial

Nigerians are arguably the most entrepreneurial people in the world. We create businesses out of nothing and survive the worst economic recession because we are smart entrepreneurs. This is why we see small businesses flourish from that tiny hut in a remote village to that company with branches around the country.

Highest number of twins in the world

Everybody loves twins! Nigerians however, have been blessed with the highest percentage of twin-births. According to a study by renowned Sierra Leonean gynaecologist, Patrick Nylander, 3 sets of twins are born in every 19 births in a place called Igbo-Ora in the western part of Nigeria. It was further discovered that this high rate of twin births was as a result of Igbo-Ora women consuming the peelings of yams which contained a certain chemical that aids twin births.

We love family

Indeed. Nigerians are very family-oriented and will always go the extra mile to stay connected to family. This is why you see families who live apart but to speak to each other for hours every day on the phone. Fortunately with apps like Zoto, they can easily recharge their phones at any time with no stress.

Nigeria is the World’s Largest Yam Producer

Yes, Nigeria produces up to 70% of all the yams consumed worldwide. No surprises that we have the highest twin birth rates, right?

Nigeria is the world’s largest producer of cassava
Just as we produce a whole lot of yam, we also do with cassava. Thailand is however, the largest exporter with 77% of world export accredited to them.

Pride of living in a beautiful country

Nigeria is a country of unbelievable beauty. Erin Ijesha Waterfalls, Osun- Osogbo Sacred Grove, Lagos Bar Beach, Mambilla Plateau, La Campagne Tropicana, Obudu Plateau, Ikogosi Warm Springs to name a but a few. Nigeria has so many beautiful attractions to be proud of!

Nigerians got talents

Forget those hilarious Nigerian Idol auditions, Nigerians are very talented and creative people. Little wonder then that our very own Nollywood is the second best in the film industry world! Nigerians have also stood out for creating some very innovative appliances, like the Nigerians listed here.

So there you have it. Can you also name one thing Nigeria can be proud of? Let us know in the comments!

Happy Independence Day Nigeria!
