Why Senator Sariki's Appeal Suffered Setback by Wilson125(m): 9:58pm On Sep 30, 2015 |
The appeal filed by the Senate president, Senator Olubukola
Saraki, was on Tuesday, September 29 postponed to next week
Tuesday, October 6 over the death of two justices of the court
of Appeal in the Saudi Arabia Hajj stampede recently.
Embattled Senate President, Bukola Saraki
The justices are the presiding judge of the Abuja division of the
court, Justice Abdukadir Jega and Justice Musa Hassan Alkali
of Ilorin division, Leadership reports.
Senator Saraki’s appeal had been filed challenging his trial at
the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).
Saraki, in the appeal challenged the trial praying the court to
halt proceedings of his trial before the tribunal over alleged
false assets declaration.
He had through his counsel, Adebayo Adelodun (SAN), brought
an ex-parte application seeking to upturn the ruling of the
tribunal. The conflicting reports on the number of Nigerians that died at the stampede during the stoning the devil ceremony, President Muhammadu Buhari had to direct the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and the Nigerian embassy in Saudi Arabia to account for all Nigerian pilgrims. Subsequently, the Islamic group, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has blamed Saudi authorities of for the stampede that occurred on Thursday, September 24, in Mina during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage, Premium Times reports. However, the court had adjourned to yesterday directing the Senate president to put the respondents on notice and adjourned till yesterday. Unfortunately, two justices of the court of Appeal were among the 54 Nigerians that died last week Thursday, September 24. The embattled Senate president at the resumption of the Senate plenary session on Tuesday told his fellow senators that his trial by the CCT has the backing of “some powerful individuals outside this chambers.” https://www.naij.com/572272-senator-sarakis-appeal-got-stalled.html |
