Whites respect history. But we Africans wallow in ignorance, even at the things other races should naturally dignify us. Who is Queen Elizabeth not to bow for the royal Biblical lineage representing the 225th descendant of King Solomon? It pains me that successive Ethiopian governments have continued to be narrow minded as to the restoration of this throne, even if apolitical. |

Elruhamah:The Pope is only a spiritual head whereas the Queen is political head. The Queen may be the head of Anglican Church, but the Bishop of Canterbury is regarded as its spiritual head. |

OrlandoOwoh:The Pope's also the political head of Vatican City which is an independent autonomous entity within Rome. |

Elruhamah:Be that as it may, following the Treaty of Westphalia, the Pope ceased to have any political power. The Vatican City is not completely autonomous from Rome. |

OrlandoOwoh: I beg to differ, the Lateran Treaty of 1929 establishing the Vatican City as an independent state clearly overrides the treaty of Westphalia signed in 1648. |

Elruhamah:"Clearly overrides the Treaty of Westphalia," you say? Can the Pope today exercise any power over the Italian President, not to talk of other European countries, like he did prior to 1648? |

Elruhamah: Quite right, the Queen of England doesn't bow to anyone, the only time she ever came close to doing that was nodding as a sign of respect when the horse drawn carriage of the coffin of princess Diana was passed before her. The person in this picture, if at all Elizabeth II, could only have bowed when a princess but definitely not as queen of England. There should be no comparison between the circumstance here and the alleged bowing by Ahmadu Bellow (if that too were true) because; in the one hand Nigeria at that time was a colony and part of the British Empire, with the Queen at the top as the Supreme leader to which everyone must bow to as mark of their respect; while on the other hand, Ethiopia was never colonised with Haile Selassie as its Emperor who like his counterpart the Queen was not obliged to bow to anyone. |

OrlandoOwoh:No he can't. But then again, what are we talking about? Have you gone through the articles of the 1929 treaty? Vatican City is an independent state (country) under the government of the Holy See which has as its head the Pope. They have their own currency, flag, passport and a seat in the United Nations General Assembly. What else in your opinion do they need to qualify as a State? As for ruling over the Italian government, of course he can't.That's another country, and he can't intrude on their sovereignty. |

Re: See How The Queen Of England Greeted Haile Selassie (photo) by OrlandoOwoh(m): 6:36pm On Oct 07, 2015 |
jpphilips:Liberia came to be when the US freed slaves were taken to West Africa after the abolition of slave trade. The US chose to take the freed slaves to West Africa just like Britain who took freed slaves to West Africa (Freetown, Sierra Leone). The capital of Liberia, Monrovia, is named after the US President at the time, James Monroe. |
