I Have A Solution To Nepa Power Problems! What Do You Think? by CCGroup: 10:45pm On Apr 23, 2009
Good day People,

I am a British born Nigerian who has just visited the country (previously been 10 years ago). Having just recently finished my studies is environmental engineering. I could not believe the lack of use of solar power.

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THE SOLAR ENERGY PRODUCTS AND SOLUTIONS MARKET IS LIKE IN NIGERIA?

Why do so many Nigerians not know that the solution to their power problems is right there in the SUN. This is a gift from GOD in the UK we do not get this kind of light.

On my recent visit I decided to start a business in Nigeria we are based in Ibaden. I think solar power has serious potential growth.

Can someone please tell me why Solar power is not big business in Nigeria? From my research I have gathered that it is a 1. lack of knowledge or the power of solar 2. Reluctance to adopt new technology 3. People with interests in NEPA and selling Kerosene are trying to suppress the growth of solar power 4. Cost of solar panels.  Is this correct?

I was on a bus travelling in Lagos and pointed out a street light in Lagos which was powered by the sun and everybody in the bus was fascinated and did not realised that you could harness electricity this way. They informed me of the problem that they have with NEPA and how they would all like this system. I stayed in a village and I brought a generator for light at night and everybody was flocking to my house to plug their phone charger! I told them they could buy a solar charger and solar lights that will take sunlight and convert it to electricity and allow them to never have to plug phone or have a generator for light. They could not believe for one second I was talking sense.

I want to ask you do you think there is a big market for solar systems and products in Nigeria? I have been thinking that there must be something I am missing not living in Nigeria as to why.

What I plan to do from my shop in Ibaden (i am also looking for shop space in Lagos?) ell Solar products ( battery chargers, phone chargers, fans, fridges, indoor lights, outdoor lights, street lights, water heaters, and also offer solar solutions so we can fit any type of system to power any of your need such as your home, office, factory, school, hospital etc.

I currently live in the UK and will be moving to Nigeria. I have a team of specialist in the UK and i have a group of men I will be training in Nigeria who will work on the solar solutions and I have sourced a supplier of my entire product from china and the UK.

I ask you people does this sound like a good idea for business? Are there a lot of solar product shops in Nigeria? Are there a lot of solar solution companies in Nigeria?

Thanks you for reading and your response.

You just said it.
People need electricity at night.

The cheapest generator set goes for N13,500 while the most expensive home unit generator go for N2-N4 million.

The big question to why nigeria has not tapped solar is.
What solar unit can you buy that can power what a tiger N13,500 generator can for 12hours
And
what unit of solar can provide the type of power matching what a N2million generator can.

Pay attention to the prices.

Answer that question for Nigerian's and your in business.
