How To Drive Traffic To Any Website Or Blog by demoreon: 1:18am On Oct 10, 2015
I have multiple options when it comes to driving traffic. Make sure you’ve Quality contents on your blog/website before you start sending traffic. When it comes to driving traffic there are many different ways of doing it and everyone has their own preferences as to how they want to do it. The most important piece of advice I can give you is to choose just one single traffic source to focus on…and focus on it. Just one. Focus on it and keep working on it till you master it and leads and sales are flooding through your funnel like crazy.

Because until you’ve completely dialed in and mastered one traffic source, spending time tinkering with multiple different sources will just waste your time, cause frustration, dilute your efforts and stall the growth of your business.

The Three Main Types of Website/Blog Traffic

When it comes to Website Traffic for our websites we have 3 main options:

Paid Traffic – This is traffic that you pay for. Things like Facebook Ads, Google Adwords, Bing Ads, Email Drops, Pay Per View, Display Ads, etc. This is on demand traffic that you can get on demand any time you want it, you just have to pay for it.

Free or Organic Traffic – This is traffic that is generated through methods that are considered free, but usually still have a hidden cost (time, indirect money). Things like organic traffic from search engines, youtube videos, article marketing, Forum Posting And Facebook Fan Page traffic. This can be very good traffic IF and WHEN you can get it. Because it’s free you can’t control it and you never know when you are going to get it.

Affiliate Traffic – This is traffic that is sent by other marketers or business owners who have email lists or other sources of captive traffic they can send to you on demand. They do this in exchange for a commission on every sale they refer you. 50% to 75% is the most common affiliate commission payout for digital products. This can be great traffic if you can get it. Affiliates can be hard to find and hard to get to promote your offer.

I recommend paid traffic initially to help build your list and base of customers. The combination of a successful marketing funnel and paid traffic source can lead to explosive growth in a business. The stability and scalability of paid traffic is a huge plus. From there you can leverage your existing traffic to build more organic traffic and use your webinar statistics to convince potential affiliates.

My Top three Recommend Traffic Sources

I Use three favorite options for driving traffic currently, Facebook Usergrow software and YouTube. I’ve included additional traffic sources below

Facebook – Facebook has incredible targeting options and an easy to use platform.

YouTube – YouTube works very well for a multi pronged organic and paid traffic approach. They also have a large amount of inventory that goes unsold which means cheap traffic.

Usergrow software: This work like magic by leveraging on authority sites of your choice. With this you will never need to spend a penny on paid advert again

It’s completely up to you which type of traffic you want to focus on first. If you have a particular strength or area of expertise when it comes to traffic then by all means start with that. However, if you are starting from scratch and need to learn how to drive traffic, then I would recommend you start with Facebook Advertising.

It allows you to get started with as small of a budget as you like and allows you the best opportunity to get your offer in front of as many ideal customers as possible.

NOTE: Don’t worry about a huge budget for your paid traffic. Even if you can only spend a few dollars a day just get it started. As you start making affiliate commissions and optimizing your funnel you can reinvest that money into more traffic. Start small and scale it up.

Other methods:

Twitter Ads: Twitter has earned it’s stay amongst the other giants of the internet and is slowly growing it’s advertising to match. They’ve recently launched tons of new features to help you achieve success. Great place to get more leads.

Reddit Ads: Reddit self-service advertising allows you to run sponsored headlines across Reddit. It’s a very dynamic platform but can be great for drilling into super passionate niches.

LinkedIn Advertising – LinkedIn ads are great for high-margin, niche B2B sales. Average income for users is the highest among most Social Networks.. 69% of users having a household income of over 50k. 33% of users have a household income of over 100k.

Doitonce:
What is reddit ads and how you advertise on lanolin?

I will start by Introducing Social Ads

Social ads have quietly become a large part of the marketplace. Compared to the traditional Adwords campaigns or Media Buying, social sites have provided advertisers with easy to use, self serve platforms and great targeting options. Best of all most of these sites are still under saturated thus providing cheap traffic, if you know how to properly optimize for it.

These sites are constantly making changes and updates giving us opportunities for better and cheaper traffic. This post will mainly focus on the differences of each platform and how to best utilize them.
Every site is slightly different when it comes to targeting and ad creative, thus i will only cover reddit since you requested for that. Whether you are looking for a cheap place to get started, or to amp up your advertising budget into tens of thousands of dollars a month, these sites will be able to handle that.
That’s the beauty of these sites and self serve advertising, you can spend $10 a day or $10k a day.

Principles

While reddit may be social our strategy won’t be. I will be following direct response principles. Simply put:

Who is your Target ?

What is your Message ?

What is your Offer ?

What is your Call to Action ?

My end goal will always be leads, sales and users. I will accomplish this through the use of landing pages and giving away something in exchange for a user’s information. It could be a free report, free trial, or videos. Once we have these leads we will need to followup with them, usually done through funnel I won’t be covering funnels here but instead keep the focus learning the reddit advertising platforms and how to best drive traffic with it.

Strategy

Regardless of what platform we choose there is still two valuable strategies we will need to give us a much greater chance of success. First we will need to do demographic research to get a better idea of whom we are targeting. Then we’ll need to run competitive intelligence to see what ads are currently working. I’ve outlined the process for demographic research and competitive intelligence below and also included a primer on landing pages.

Demographics

Demographics will provide us with more information about our target user. We can use this information for more precise targeting measures resulting in better ads. Basic demographics span across gender, income, age range, education, martial status, main county and ethnicity. We obtain this information by using tools to look at a main competitors site or a news site that represents the face of the industry. The following is assuming you don’t already have demographic data from your own website, or a large enough data sample. So instead we will relay on similar sites for their data. The example of an app for Yoga will be used in the following. First we’ll want to find a good news or blog site that represents this demographic assuming we don’t have any data of our own site. Simply Google the word yoga followed by blog, news, magazine, or forum works best. When typing ‘yoga magazine’ our first result is YogaJournal.com. This looks like a suitable site. We will then take this URL and plug it into the following sites. You’ll want to open a text document or spreadsheet to input this information depending on your preference. Using Alexa and Quantcast, or multiple sites, we can cross reference our data for accuracy.

1. Alexa

When using the free plan Alexa will give us more limited information but will still provide a good start. For YogaJournal Alexa shows us the following.. Gender: mainly female Education: mostly college Browsing location: home Also included is the audience geography which is 46.3% USA. We can also see top keywords used to find the site. At the very bottom we see sites that are related to YogaJournal which can be useful if the data is insufficient or we want to cross reference YogaJournal’s demographics against a different yoga site’s demographics.

2. Quantcast
Quantcast will provide us with deeper demographic information. For YogaJournal Quantcast shows us the following.. Gender: mainly female Age: largely 18-24 and 25-34 Kids: dominantly no kids Income: 50 to 100 thousand usd and 100 to 150k usd, though it’s by a narrow margin. Education: College and Grad School. Ethnicity: Caucasian and Asian. Also shown ‘audience also likes’ or interests of the audience. This can be useful in interest based targeting. The top 3 are travel news & info, science/nature, and fashion/cosmetics. Want more data? Use SimilarSites.com and SimilarWeb.com to find sites similar to the initial site you used for research.

Here is some info about the Reddit advertising platform, it’s unique potential and how the social ‘network’ works.

Breakdown of the Platform

Ad Format: Text with image
Ad Components: Sponsored link: Headline and image as large ad 70×70.
Approval Process: Manual typically 2 business days
Targeting: Subreddit
Minimum Spend: 5 usd for self serve
Ad Costs: 0.75 usd CPM. So 75 cents for every 1,000 impressions.

Introduction

Ah the front page of the internet. Now if you are into the startup culture it is highly likely you’ve been on Reddit before. Reddit self-service advertising allows you to run sponsored headlines across Reddit. A sponsored headline is the blue stickied post at the top of the page. They are now sold on a CPM basis. Before they were sold where you bought a portion of total available impressions. Campaigns are also sold as managed campaigns which include 300×250 and 300×100 side bad images. Sponsored headlines can also now include dropdown text. You can use the longer text box to share stories, link to other source of information, or even include an excerpt chapter from your book.

Who Uses Reddit?

Think college-educated white male in his early 30s earning approximately 50,000 usd per year in income. This is for the site as a whole though, remember it will vary greatly Subreddit to Subreddit.

What Makes Reddit Ads Different

Engagement

Engagement is the one of the most unique things about Reddit ads. Users can and WILL comment on your ads. Every ad is subject to the feedback, compliments, and criticism from those who see it. You’ll be provided with direct input on what works and what doesn’t work.

Note: Making changes to your ads based on comments is a best practice for Reddit Ads. The audience will live to see you actually responding to feedback. A great example provided later will show how DuckDuckGo achieved a top post because of this.

Participate

This may not be feasible depending upon ROI. Participating in the community will give you valuable research. When you go to post your ad will what know what works and what doesn’t work. You’ll learn the culture of the Subreddit itself. Redditors will see you as a part of the community which is likely to provide better results.

Background Check

Everything in the history of your account will be judged. If you do participate then you will likely pass this background check. The longer you’ve been a Redditor and the more active you are, the more credible your ‘score’ will be.

The Basic 4 Steps

Submit the URL/title for whatever it is that you want to promote.
Configure how long you want the ad to run and how much you want to spend.
Choose whether you want it to run site-wide or in a specific Reddit.
Wait two days for approval and your ad will be up.

Note: If isn’t obvious don’t ever view pornographic or ‘inappropriate’ material with this account. Also stay away from any offensive statements. This incriminating material will be brought up.

Advanced Tactics Explanation

1. Ad Creative

Get a feel for Reddit first before you post an ad. Get used to the language of Reddit and check out relevant Subreddits that you might post to. Technically choosing a Subreddit is more targeting but we’ll need to know our audience in order to create a relevant ad. When it comes to choosing the Subreddit these following sites can help you check how many subscribers, how active they are and the growth.

A. Reddit.com/Reddits Reddit’s built in subreddit search. A good place to start.

B. Stattit.com – can provide information on individual subreddits. Example: /r/startups has 16 submissions per day, 219 comments per day and 26,175 subscribers.

C. Redditlist.com – tracks the top 5,000 subreddits by recent activity, subscribers and growth.

D. Metareddit.com – good for finding related subreddits. Example: A search for startup provides 84 reddits. Once we have 2-5 subreddits picked out we need to learn them. Each subreddit will have different formating, submission guidelines and rules. Now you don’t have to follow these in order to submit your ad but you do want your ad to blend in rather then feel out of place. Also take the time to research other ads in the space. Create an enticing headline. Stick to up front language. Consider giving away something. Use proper Reddit language or a meme that fits within that subreddit. A interesting image will also help click-throughs. Inspiration: Check http://www.reddit.com/r/ads/ which shows ads that run on Reddit and discussions about them.

2. Targeting

Use the information we gathered in the ad creative section to choose which subreddits to target. It is highly recommended to target a subreddit. Each campaign can only target one subreddit. You will need to create multiple campaigns to target multiple subreddits. If using the same copy and thumbnail then your vote count and comment section will be centralized into one. Geotargeting is planned to be added in the future but is not currently available.

3. Budget
Select a budget. Remember to start slow. The minimum spend is 5 usd to get started but that can be spread across multiple days. With the new CPM system you may encounter a problem running an ad to smaller subreddits. 5 usd may be over the amount of impressions that a subreddit will allow thus not allowing you to create a campaign. If you encounter problems running ads to smaller subreddits then extend your campaign to more days to get more impressions and hit the minimum. Also you can contact Reddit at selfservicesupport at reddit dot com and link to your ad and they can potentially override the 5 usd minimum.

4. Approval

Each ad is approved by hand. It will take an ad approximately 2 business days to be approved. Once an ad is approved and paid for it will run at the scheduled date. Ads start at midnight EST. Links cannot be edited once live. Also live ads cannot be paused or canceled.

5. Ongoing
You can’t edit a campaign once it is running but you can add new campaigns. To extend a running ad, just create a campaign that starts immediately after the current one ends and it will run uninterrupted.

Pro Tips
Nothing wrong with longer titles. Just try to keep them from becoming two lines.
First person point of view tends to work best rather than infomercial feeling messages.
Content gets more clicks than a blatant ad. Trying to just sell them something will be tuned out. One marketer got good results from an awkward penguin meme coupled with a problem/solution statement.

Call out the specific subreddit you are advertising to.
You can sponsor subreddits. Example: http://www.reddit.com/r/gamedeals was sponsored by Amazon. Contact Reddit’s advertising team in order to set it up.

CASE STUDY OF A REDDIT Ad

The following information is credited to Gabriel Weinberg titled ‘My Duck Duck Go Reddit ad by the numbers’. His Reddit ad provided better ROI than his ads on Google Adwords, Yahoo, Bing, Facebook, Myspace, and StumbleUpon.

The ad itself ran for 13 days. Total cost was 650 at 50 per day. In total it received 1,288,378 impressions (282,732 uniques) and yielded 20,700 clicks (18,420 uniques).

Biggest Takeaways

Redditors will try out your site. Visitors aren’t worth much if they don’t actually check out the site.

Redditors will comment on your site. You can turn this feature off but you shouldn’t! He received about 656 comments though half were his responses.

He got immensely useful feedback; fixing bugs, feature requests, first impressions, and most importantly he was able to engage with users in near real time.
Suggestions worth gold.

One was to do an Ask Me Anything submission. Another suggestion was to stop storing IP addresses. After implementing this suggestion and submitting it to Reddit, his post reached the Reddit front page somewhere around number 5.

These two posts (AMA and about IP addresses) yielded more traffic than his entire ad. Note: The circular duck icon draws your attention. It’s contrasting to site colors and is a circle while most are square. Below is the ad
