Flood: 158 Persons Displaced In Delta by WHOcarex: 11:49am On Oct 12, 2015
Barely four days after the Delta State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) commenced the relocation of flood victims to Asaba Township Stadium, LEADERSHIP correspondent, Kola Eke-Ogiugo, and 157 others were at the weekend displaced by the ravaging flood.

Investigation revealed that the number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) within Asaba and its environs has risen above 157 with many of them being children.

Strong indications are that the number of victims most of whom are residents at the power line axis of Asaba, would rise after the initial number of 96 IDPs increased to 127 and at present, 157 when our correspondent visited the camp.

Besides the presence of security and SEMA personnel at the camp, men of the Red Cross Society were also at the indoor sports hall of the state sports council where the flood victims including our correspondent were being housed at present.

A top official at the camp, Mr Ernest Ndukwe, told our correspondent that the ministry of special duties in collaboration with the state committee headed by the state governor, Barr Kingsley Otuaro, were putting up measures to ensure the provision of food, clothes, drugs and other necessities in the camp.

But our informed sources said that in lieu of preparations for the national sports festival expected to begin soon at the Indoor Sports Hall, the flood victims might be relocated to the football main complex which is being cleaned up as at the time of filing this report.

Ndukwe however called on public spirited individuals and organizations to complement government’s efforts in the provision of relieve materials to the displaced persons as officials of SEMA had earlier allegedly raised the alarm of inadequate food supply and other necessities to the camp

Some of the victims who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the camp was presently being faced with feeding challenges, while one Angela Nwoja, a wife of a wheelbarrow pusher and mother of four children alleged that they were being fed once a day since their arrival at the camp.

But the state director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Sir Isaac Ezechi, disclosed that the federal government would be holding a meeting with all community leaders on the effective ways to manage the incidence saying that government was also propping up measures to alleviate the pains of the victims.

In a swift reaction, the state commissioner for information, Mr Patrick Ukah, decried activities of some officials of SEMA over poor management of the victims, assuring that the state governor, Dr- Ifeanyi Okowa was committed to the well being of the victims.
