I was reading about people mocking Alams in death and wondered why. I personally do not have any problems with saying bad about the dead, if they are truly bad - I am not that superstitious or religious to refuse to call a spade a spade for fear of ghosts or spiritual retribution. However, I do have a problem about ignorantly mocking a hero of his people in death, if not for the sake of the dead, then for the living. I first came across this macabre dance of death on Nky Iweka wall and immediately expressed my opinion - THIS POST IS TRULY SICK. All they could talk about was corruption. Not one acknowledgement of why this man was a hero amongst his people. Next I came across it on Zainab Abba Haliru wall. Zainab in her characteristic way was humane, sensitive to the living and trying to understand why he was vilified by some and yet loved by others. I replied to Zainab that she was seriously misled by what she read in Social Media, especially by those tribal bigots and liberal bull-shitters influenced by the Lagos Press, who think they are modern change agents or pace setters. These liberal bull-shitters are so pre-occupied with the phony war on corruption they can't even see that the economy is being crippled. Do they think Ojukwu or Igbo people would have cared a hoot what Yoruba or Hausa said about Ojukwu? Not at all. As Ojukwu is to Igbo so is Alams to Ijaw. I have decided to give my own vivid impression of Alams based on my personal experience of the man and his works, and why the Ijaw honour him. Alams was tripped up by Obasanjo when he started fighting for resource control and opposing Obj 3rd term. He is considered by the Ijaw people their next greatest hero after Adaka Boro, the sixties freedom fighter. He is greater than Jonathan in Ijaw Land. Any indictment in UK means very little in this context. Most Nigerian leaders are thieves anyway, and it pales into insignificance given his enormous achievements for the Ijaw people - fighting for the creation of Bayelsa State and then building the State from nothing. When I first visited Bayelsa in 2000, Yenogoa was just a street with stilt houses on sticks in swamps on either sides of the street with only 2 rat infested motels. Alams turned Yenogoa into a bustling, vibrant, beautiful city; He sand filled the entire city and laid out magnificent dual carriage ways, beautifully tarred... He established a university, Niger Delta University in which I played a very important role. My association in the UK trained over 100 of its lecturers. We started Niger Delta University from two offices in swamp ridden Yenogoa - with my friend John Buseri, the first Vice Chancellor, holed up in one cramped little office. We used to take river boat to Amasoma to develop the present site of the university before Alams built the beautiful bridge to Amasoma. Today Niger Delta University is one of the more beautifully laid out Universities in Nigeria. Alams also built the polytechnic, college of education, college of nursing and modern hotels. He laid out the comprehensive network of well tarred streets over the previous swamps of Yenogoa and built bridges connecting numerous islands in the creeks. Alams built schools throughout Ijaw land and health centres and modern River Boat services across the creeks to connect the islands with modern launches. When we first went to Amasoma it was a canoe with outboard engine. The last time I did before the building of the bridge it was in relative luxury in one of the modern launches. Nationally, he assisted to bring peace to the Niger Delta by negotiating with the militants to bring about Amnesty. For this alone we owe him gratitude. I consider those who mock this man in death truly SICK. Corruption, corruption mantras by hypocritical witch-hunters? Such bitching is irrelevant. Alams will be greatly honoured by the Ijaw nation. Ijaw people take note and explain better. Defend your own. . 1 Like |

This goes to show that Alams was an unsung hero afterall. I believe this would go a long way in changing the psyche of those Lagos-Ibadan press... RIP to him... May the good lord give the Ijaw nation the fortitude to bear this loss. |
