Are you thinking about starting up a business? Good for you! It’s an exciting prospect and can bring many rewards. There are lots of good ways to go about that, but what follows is a list of things not to do.

*Not really having a plan. Not really having any goals. Not really doing any thinking about the who-what-where-when-why-how and how-much pieces going forward. Really? You’re just going to wing this and hope for the best? Please don’t! You owe it to yourself to do some rigorous planning and get it written down on paper.

*Starting a business for the ego satisfaction. You might be daydreaming about the rewards and recognition you’ll have when you save the environment, or rescue all the children everywhere, or some other lofty (and ridiculously overblown) dream. Gratifying your ego is no reason to start a business (or a nonprofit for that matter), so don’t even start down that road.

*Going in it purely for the big fast money.First of all, the money probably won’t be fast. And at least at first, it certainly won’t be big. You may be intending to build a large profitable business, and that’s great. But right out of the gate it isn’t going to happen. Always plan for things taking longer than you expect and bringing in less revenue than you expect.

*Hiring people you like instead of people who have the skill sets you need.Enjoying someone’s company isn’t a good enough reason to hire. You need people with skills that complement you own, with points of view that are different from yours, and experience you lack. Be strategic about hiring.

*Not asking for help. There are lots of great resources out there; some of them are even free. Take advantage of the support systems offered at the Small Business Development Center and through networking groups and your local chamber of commerce. Find a good accountant and an attorney you trust. Develop a network of other business owners who can keep you informed. Ask all of these folks to assist you when you have challenges. You’ll be glad you did.
