BABA PRESIDENT; THE YOUTHS ARE PATIENT, FOR NOW.
By Emmy Chi Bandoh

A popular African adage says "a roaring lion kills no game". Meaning: You cannot achieve or gain anything by mere sitting around and just talking about it. This seem to be the case since the commencement of Baba's government
This piece is not meant to discredit our corruption tackling president, but to spur him to do more, or in a clearer statement, to spur him to do more than just talking about our problems.
It is common knowledge that an average Nigerian politician is corrupt. It's also stale news that the previous governments of Jonathan and co stole Nigeria dry. It will be humbler if your actions do the talking. It is almost like a weekly agenda is being followed whenever any of the mouthpiece of the government comes out to talk on the previous government previous escapades. It is either Oshiomole today, or Amaechi tomorrow. The unfolding events is almost like a joke with Basketmouth at the centre.
There's been lots of critics of the current government, ranging from the opinions that your corruption fight is one-sided, to the saying that your ministerial list lacks conviction considering it took a staggering 4 months to get the dream team ready. Although opinion remains divided over the ministerial list, National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, opinionated that the team cannot drive Buhari’s avowed change. “Buhari has succeeded in creating problems for the people in some states. For instance, in Niger state where I come from, the governor is from Kotangora and the person he has nominated is also from Kotangora. In Plateau, the governor Lalong and Dalong are from the same local government. In Oyo state, Barrister Shittu who has been rejected by all the APC people, he has included his name on this list. For us in Labour Party, we did not see anything like change here,”he stated in vanguard.

The Democratic People’s Congress (DPC) however commended Buhari for nominating patriotic, credible and dynamic Nigerians for ministerial positions. DPC National Chairman, Rev. Olusegun Peters, said: ‘’We believe the ministerial nominees are the dream team that will actualize President Buhari’s transformation agenda
and fast track the nation’s dwindling economy. It is statesmanship at its best.
“Nigerians need men and women of integrity with exceptional passion to serve the fatherland and direct the ship of the Nigeria state to the part of rectitude, progress,
development and advancement. Inept leadership has been the bane of the country’s socio-economic and political development. President Buhari’s dream team is a giant
step forward towards economic emancipation and political salvation of our long suffering compatriots.’'
Speaking honestly, Nigerians will continue to remain divided over this government, not minding what the topic is. The youths of this country aggregate about 60 or 70 percent of your voting populace. It is my advice that you start paying attention to them instead of lots of talking with very little action. I have always preached for patients with your government whenever I am engrossed in discourse with my fellow youths considering that Rome was not built in a day, or in four months as the case may be.
Quoting you in vanguard, may 28, 2015; Some of your enticing promises includes, "Equate N1.00 to $1.00.
"Embark on vocational training, entrepreneurial and skills acquisition scheme for graduates along with the creation of Small Business Loan Guarantee Scheme to create at least 5 million new jobs by 2019. A Small and Medium Enterprises Development Commission will be created for this purpose. I will also encourage State Governments to focus on employment creation, by matching everyone job created in the same state." If according to your campaign promise, you will give us 5 million jobs by 2019, that should equate to 1.25 million jobs per year of your four year administration, which means statistically we the youths should expect to be getting over a hundred thousand(100,000) jobs per month, simple maths tells me that your inability to give anything means we have lost over 400,000 jobs in your first four months in office. A popular Nigerian artist in a song asked a question which I'm directing to you right now, "Shéy na like this we go de dey"? What we expect is that you will start prioritising us along with other areas you consider as pressing.
The youths of this country are not asking for too much, all they need is a future, this can be done by beginning to fulfill some campaign promises made. For example, what's the fate of the NYSC Batch C that passed out on 15th of October, 2015? One of your famous election promise was to "Provide allowances to the discharged but unemployed Youth Corps members for Twelve (12) months while in the skills and entrepreneurial development programmes." Or is it going to be the usual story of "the poor man and the rich man do not play together''
Baba president, millions of youths believed in you before the election, they buzzed for you like bees on twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp and more because you spoke about the things they wanted, now you have what you wanted, are you going to throw us by the wayside like the previous governments you vigorously preached against
Well, all we are saying is we the youths of the country are still patient, we know you need time, but all we are asking is that you call off your dogs, we are tired of hearing bogus sums on radios, let's read of arrests and prosecutions. If it is corruption you want to attack, go ahead, if it is the economy, please do so, all we are asking for is action, and in ways it affects the youths positively. Second Republic politician and lawyer, Chief Guy Ikokwu said, ‘’Nigerians are watching and wondering aloud and praying for the mantra. The screening is now in the public domain and social media which is now scrutinising the list. The president is very watchful and wants also to be guided. We want a cabinet that will enthrone discipline, accountability, equity, fairness, education, health, diversification, devolution of powers, and restructuring so that the nation can move forward at at least nine percent, which is a quantum growth rate for Africa’s biggest economy with production and reduced consumption of imports as a dumping ground.’’
Another African proverb says "a chick that will grow into a cock can be spotted the very day it hatches." Baba, the starting signs are not too good, we are hoping it becomes better. The youths are patient Sir, for now..!
