LAGOS—The Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos,
UNILAG, Professor Rahmon Bello has said that
adequate compensation must be made by Eko
Electricity Distribution Plc, EKEDP to the family of
late Miss Oluchi Anekwe.
Bello who spoke during a press briefing at the
institution’s conference centre said: ‘’The Federal
Government panel findings has established that
the faulty cable which caused Oluchi’s death
belong to EKEDP and they must pay
compensation to the family of the deceased.
‘’EKEDP has put in place an Assurance Policy by
an Insurance company whereby a compensation
will be paid to family of a deceased in case of
lost of life. The Insurance company has been
contacted to come and assess the damage and
give their recommendations for compensation. As
soon as this is done, we will know the amount.’’
Contrary to reports that late Oluchi was not
professionally handled when she arrived at the
Medical Centre, Bello disclosed that the
University panel has established that both the
nurse and doctor on duty confirmed she had no
pulse on arrival and she was brought in dead to
the Medical Centre.
He said: ‘’In accordance with standard practice,
while her body was deposited at the mortuary, an
autopsy was conducted and the pathologist came
to the conclusion that her death occurred within
seconds to few minutes of contact with the 11KV
electric cable.’’
He, however said that to forestall future
occurrence, on August 26, 2015, in a later, the
institution had requested EKEDP to ensure that
all overhead cables within the campus are buried
in line with safety standard.
You will recalled that on Tuesday, September 8,
2015 at about 7pm an 11 KV overhead
transmission cable belonging to the EKEDP,
which supplies power to Onike and other
neighbouring communities around UNILAG fell
and electrocuted Oluchi Anekwe, a 300-Level
Accounting student.
Meanwhile, on the findings of Mr Baruwa Afeez
Akinfolarin who allegedly raped a female seeking
admission, the Vice Chancellor said: ‘’Baruwa is
not a staff of the Department of Accounting.
According to him, Baruwa had never taught any
course in the Department of Accounting or in any
other department in the Faculty of Business
Administration.’’
He explained; ‘’the relationship that Mr. Baruwa
Afeez Akinfolarin had with the UNILAG is that he
was a former student of the university where he
did his undergraduate degree course at the
Distance Learning Institute, DLI and also his
Postgraduate degree course M.Sc. Marketing in
the Faculty of Business Administration. ‘’He was
later engaged by the DLI as a project supervisor
and invigilator for its residential programme in
the 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 Academic
