HOW TO PROPAGATE YAM THROUGH MINISETTS
Yam is a major stable food and source of income for over 60million people in Africa. It has a major production constraint as farmers often use leftover yam, mostly taken from disease yam as plant material; thereby reducing yield.
In this tutorial, I will be teaching how to produce seed yam using ministtts technology in different stages. Farmers normally keep one third of their previous seed for next year production. The major problem with this method is that they keep seed very small resulting from plant diseases as seed yam. Tubers that are not made to be eaten nor sold are kept for production of the next season.
In other to put an end to that system, that is why I will be teaching you the minisetts technology.
To produce seed using minisett technology, we have several stages;
Stage 1
Selections of mother seed yam
What is mother seed yam?
Mother seed yams are yam weighing between 500g – 1kg
Using a bigger size will result to wastage of the flesh
How to select good mother seed yam?
The mother seed yam should be free from diseases. The mother seed yam must have broken dormancy; the sign of dormancy is when you see that it is SPROUTING

How to know yams that are not good for mother seed?

New developments in agriculture
Should you add Moringa to your crops?

The aerial parts of Moringa, especially leaves are the rich source of nutrients and many other essential compounds. Spraying or other forms of application of Moringa leaves on crops leaves a very positive impact on the crops. Moringa is rich in “Zeatin”- a form of cytokinin, is an excellent growth promoter. It not only enhances the germination of crops up to 25%, but also increases the crop yield up to 35%. There are several ways in which we can add Moringa or Moringa extracts to the crops; a few of them are as follows:read full article on MyAgricWorld webiste

PLANTAIN SUCKER MULTIPICATION
This tutorial is to teach you the plantain sucker multiplication as a means to produce relatively clean and healthy plantain suckers (plantlet) in a period of 2 to 4month.
Plantain and banana is an important crop for food security and source of income for farmers. The major means of propagation of plantain is through the suckers. These suckers are obtain from the mother plant which simply implies that it has the same characteristics as the mother sucker and in a situation where the mother sucker is diseased, the resulting sword suckers are likely to be diseased as well which result in poor planting materials to farmers and subsequently low yield or even outbreak of diseases. Unlike maize that a cob can give as many as 250 seeds, plantain don’t readily produce planting materials thus availability of clean, viable and affordable planting material is a major difficulty facing plantain and banana plantation. The method of sucker multiplication on the field is usually referred to as macro propagation.
Advantage of this method
 It gives relatively healthy plant
 It can be done locally at low cost with minimum training
 A private person or private organization can launch this activities
 Produced suckers are easily transportable and sold.

As we all know that the demand for cocoa seed is extremely high at the international market and the international price is quite encouraging to farmers. The crop is a perennial crop which is planted once and the harvest keeps coming, year in year out depending on the management practices. The cocoa beans is one of the hottest agricultural product in the market anywhere in the world.
However, to establish a cocoa plantation, various factors need to be put into consideration. This includes; climate of the locality, average rainfall per millimeter, temperature, humidity, and type of soil and planting material.
For optimum production or productivity, rainfall could actually be supplemented with modern irrigation in cases of erratic rainfall. For optimum performance, 1250 to 3000mm per annum of rainfall is required. The dried up period must not be further than three months. Cocoa trees are susceptible than other tropical crops to moisture stress.
Based on the required temperature, 30 to 32oC is considered favorable for crop performance. Humidity has to be taken in consideration too. High humidity can lead to the spread of fungal diseases which may affect the growth of the cocoa crop and the storage and drying of it could be at risked also.
As a soil scientist, a variety of soil types could be favorable to the cocoa plant. The soil ought to be such as allowing uncomplicated access of roots able of retaining dampness during warm season of the year. Clay loams and sandy loams are also appropriate. Although, it is strongly recommend to carry out a soil physiochemical analysis at the beginning of the project; especially when the size of land is more than five hectares. At planting, the potting mixture and type of sowing must consist of farm yard manure, sand and soil in identical magnitude to propagate the cocoa seedlings.
Considering the mode of propagation, cocoa can be propagated sexually (seed) and asexually (vegetative manner). Cocoa seed can be raise into seedlings; seeds of grown-up pods are taken from lofty yielding mother plants which should generate one hundred pods per year.
At harvest, a cocoa seed can naturally lose its viability 7days after harvest if not properly store or process. Therefore, proper storage is the key to avoid this from happening.
NOTE: The best time to sow seeds in the nursery is during the month of December to January and it is strongly advisable to site your nursery very close to your farm.

Why are Nigerian farmer shying away from Palm tree plantation (palm oil business)?

The main reason most Nigerians farmers are not paying attention to oil palm tree plantation is because they think palm tree take so many years to mature to the point of production, therefore they are not ready to wait.
