DELE GIWA: MAN AMONG MEN OF HIS EPOCH
“Dele Giwa was the allegorical shower of blessing that reinvented the parched Nigerian journalism in the mid-80s. He helped transform the nation’s press from the ‘straight jacket' reporting mode, to a new era of ‘scientific journalism,’ infused with investigation, analysis, abstraction, creative writing, and audacious presentation. Dele Giwa, a man among the men of his time, was on a mission to help build a new Nigeria devoid of venality, inequity, spiritual chauvinism, and ethnic jingoism. With his innovative and courageous mode of reporting, Dele Giwa demonstrated that he was on a mission to prevent individuals and groups from holding transparency, accountability, and integrity to ransom in Nigeria.
Lamentably, the unethical military dictator of that era, the despotic General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, ostensibly ordered the state security eradicators, including Tunde Togun and Haliru Akilu, to end the life of the indefatigable Giwa, with a letter bomb, on October 19, 1986. The prized life of the unflagging Dele Giwa was cut short, for planning to publish a ‘reveal-all,’ on one Gloria Okon, who was an alleged drug courier for the Babangidas. Nigerians and the world gave General Babangida a chance, to investigate and figure out who killed Giwa? With the seemingly endless state apparatchiks at his disposal, Babangida didn’t make use of the opportunity to wave away the accusing fingers from his face.” – DELE AJAJA
