Corruption Not Nigeria’s Major Problem – Nwabueze Tells Buhari by Episteme2(m): 9:56am On Oct 23, 2015
Foremost constitutional lawyer, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, has
stated that corruption is not Nigeria’s primary problem.
Speaking on behalf of his group, the Igbo Leaders of
Thought, the elder statesman warned President
Muhammadu Buhari to be careful in the fight against
corruption.
Nwabueze made the group’s feelings known after an
extensive meeting in Enugu.
The group noted that other vital issues like poverty, illiteracy
and security should not be neglected because of the
campaign against corruption.
Speaking to journalists, Nwabueze, however, observed that
the current preoccupation with the anti-corruption campaign
had unfortunately relegated other serious national
challenges to the background.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria said, “Everybody is thinking
that all that we need is to fight corruption; it is important,
but it is not our primary problem.
“There are other issues that are even more important than
corruption.
“We have the question of illiteracy, the question of poverty,
the question of security.
“As important as the war against corruption is, we are of the
view that there are other issues that overshadow corruption.
“Another issue is what we call the national question.”
Shedding further light on the ‘national question’, Nwabueze
said Nigeria was not a nation.
He said, “The national question means the problem of
evolving Nigeria into a nation.
“Nigeria is not a nation; it is a state.
“We all want to belong to that state but we deceive ourselves
always by thinking and painting the picture that we are
already a nation; we are not.”

Well said. Corruption is a problem but, not the over riding problem. Deeper problems exist and poverty is number one until and unless any war on corruption translates to money in the pockets of the masses, it will remain a diversion! QED

The SAN is right. If the poor are comfortable they won't take bribes or compromise their integrity. Corruption won't be systemic as it ism if the populace were enlightened they won't allow a few greedy ones decide their fate. If poverty and illiteracy is tackled the orientation of the people would change. Is there no corruption in the developed countries? why is it not sang as a national pledge over there? To my understanding they ve justice and equity with sincere plans to make hard working people live above d poverty line. Education and enlightenment is vigorous thus their people know their rights and obey the law.
We can't say we are fighting corruption while Looking for men of integrity in hungry people. There is no integrity in poverty or ignorance/illiteracy.
We need to get our goals right to arrive @ the right destination or we would just land @ a destination for movement sake. (wasted journey like in 1983 - 1984)

Corruption is the cause of insecurity, poverty and health issues. Nwabueze is lying. I get it that Nigeria's FG should stimulate investment but Nigeria has fulfilled most conditions for investment flow of at least $30 bn inflows every year. The only problem holding investors is CORRUPTION. The only thing that makes Nigerians disrespected abroad is corruption. Nigeria is well known for crimes and corruption. In the last 3 months I have listened to testimonies from Filipinos, Chinese, Indians and Britons. In Africa , S. Africans, Ghanaians ,;Kenyans and Ugandans have shouted this same thing.

Nwabueze is wrong.

It is endemic corruption that has made poverty, illiteracy and many other challenges to persist.

Remove corruption from Nigeria and see how quickly we will develop.

I am surprised a Prof. can talk like this.

ok those other nations are saints and nigerians are corrupt but, they habour the proceeds of corruption. If u allow such perception to control u then, nationalism will never be attained. Corruption is a problem but, not the overriding problem. In fact corruption is only a symptom of a deeper problem in institutions, infrastructure and lack of inventiveness.

Corruption remains the main problem of Nigeria:
When we had few literate nigerians, corruption was scarce. They were men of integrity.
When churches and mosques were few, we had good christians and muslims.

But today that we have many literate citizens and, church and mosque goers, corruption has skyrocketed. Maybe, too much knowledge equates to massive corruption.

Don't he see that too much education has become a pain in our system?

Very true. Our major problem isn't corruption. The major problems are namely: the question of illiteracy, the question of poverty, the question of security and most importantly, the national question.

Let's not face one and neglect 10..

You can't fight a war on a weak foundation. Corruption is merely the symptom of aa state that is not a nation and lacks unity of purpose... People do all sorts of things with the mind state that the Nigerian state is " temporary " and transient.

Get the foundation right and corruption is minimized to "acceptable" standards

The present 'monocratic' form of government does not portray us as a nation and neither have our amalgamation. A situation where only a section of the country control the three arms of government and southerners in their myopia, deaf to reason and reality became prey to a fraudulent change mantra.

The Nigerian structure is faulty and fraudulent.

A large section of southern legislators voted to ensure the north controls their own arm of government for your information
