This has been something that has caused controversies in the ummah in recent times. There is a relatively new thinking in the ummah that says when you give birth to a child on monday before maghrib the aqeeqah will be on sunday. This issue has been addressed by various scholars and no one disputes the issue of 7th day in the hadeeth but the main contest has been when do you start to count.

In my humble opinion i belong to the school of thought that suggests giving birth on monday before maghrib the child will be named on Monday as well and this is according to Maliki, Hanafi and Shafi fiqh and I am not sure about Hambali though. One of the arguments of these scholars is that it is acknowledged and established in islamic fiqh that jumah is every 7 days so why is the next jumah not on Thursday if the seven days is counted like suggested. The opinion furhter illustrates that the 1st day in which the baby was born is day 0 and day 1 starts to count from the next day. Also Ramadhan (9th month) is every 12 months why is the month of fasting not in shaban(the 8th month), these are some of the arguements to illustrate the start of the count.

However if the child is born after maghrib , that is counted as the next day already as the night precedes the day in Islam.

We should also bear in mind the child could be named on the day of his birth and the aqeeqah mainly refers to the slaughtering of the animal, shaving of the hair and this is sunnah muaqada (compolusory sunnah) and not fard (which is an obligation and sinful if you do not do ). According to the hadith itself the slaughtering could also be done on the 14th day and 21st day or even when the child grows up if the parent cannot afford to slaughter an animal for him.

The differences in interpretaion of the 7th day should not cause confusion in the ummah as this is a fiqh issue and there will always be differences in fiqh till day of judgement.

And Allah knows best.

@lagosboy.
Much as I support your views expressed in the response,however,the following had to be corrected.
It is to be known that the issue of Seventh Day naming is not a recent thinking,it is a sunnah that had hitherto been neglected by people and its gradually coming back to reckoning due to recent widespread of knowledge and awakening of people to sunnah.As for your humble opinion,it is contrary to the fiqh of the Imams you quoted.Contrary to what you arrogated to them,all the Imams,Abu Haneefah,Shaafi' and Hanbalee,except Imam Maalik are of the opinion that when a child is given birth to on Monday,the Aqeeqah(slaughtering of the animal)will be on Sunday.That is,the counting starts the day of its birth,and the next day is the second day and it continues like that until its seventh day.And this is the preponderant or more correct of the opinion.It was only Imam Maalik that said the counting starts the next day of the birth except if the baby is born in the night.Check BIDAAYATUL MUJTAHID OF IBN RUSHDEE.
Thus,if the child is born on Monday,the counting starts that day because,the Prophet said(its seventh day:meaning the baby's seventh day.)So,the day of birth is inclusive and it is the day 1 and not day 0,while day 2 is the second day,day 3 the third day until day 7 the seventh day.Chek UMDATUL FIQH EXPLANATION BY SHINQEETEE.This is quite different from the days of the week or month of the year counting that you mentioned i.e Jumu'ah,fifth day of the week,Ramadan,9th month of the year etc.
And Allaah knows best.
