I will accept all you have said. You have done well by not keeping quiet and giving me the best advice because someday, the car will still need to head back to lagos I doubt if a rebuilt engine can go that distance. I will start saving up for a new engine and dispose the car I wish this hadn't happened I was about to upgrade to another ride.

eyaa, no one is above mistake,
let me guess anxiety for today's trip caused all this. it happens, just put ur head up, yuh are a man, doont cry over spilt milk, am sure you have learnt your lesson.
weda the car is tokunbo or tear rubber, after driving dat long, everything needed be checked.

dannnnnngggg ! Tough luck bro, this is indeed a learning curve for you.
NEVER EVER TRAVEL WITHOUT CHECKING FLUID LEVELS. EVEN IF YOU CHECKED FLUID LEVEL BEFORE STARTING JOURNEY, CHECK ANY TIME YOU BREAK TO REST OR REFRESH

Hard luck, kpele. It was hard to believe you continued your journey without checking fluid level.
So, how did it go with the mechanic?

@GAZZUZZ, since the beginning of this thread you have been hammering on the rebuilt engine, please educate. What precautions should one take on a rebuilt engine.
Re: 1000km Journey Using a 1.5L petrol engine, CLARION CALL by Denn(m): 6:26am On Nov 07, 2015
Those pot holes could have created a crack on your sump leading to oil seepage.

It also seems your oil indicator light/gauge ( called idiot light in some climes) was not working or you ignored it. A lowered oil pressure would have alerted you.

Try to check for "half-engine". Should not cost you more than 10k in extra costs.

Sorry pal

This is a side comment but related to the issue at hand.

To help the OP and anyone else doing long distance drives.

I have driven with a leaking transmission till I completed my journey. I discovered some 200 kilometers into my trip that my one of my seals was wrecked, and it had to do I believe with an object that I hit very hard at a very high rate of speed. I make this observation because when I left that morning, I had no such problem.

But this is what saved me, I carry spare engine oil and transmission oil, I even have a spare power steering pump, oil filter, water pump, serpentine belt, water pump belt, all sorts of hoses and clips and tools, complete set of tie rods, fuel filter, fuel pump, to mention but a few, just in case I meet trouble on the road. It takes less time to fix them if I have them on-board than first of all having to locate the auto parts market.

As soon as I discovered the leakage, I would stop to top of the transmission fluid every 80 kilometers until I arrived at my destination. That is how I was able to drive another 400 kilometers and then fixed the problem the next day. Of course, I had to buy some more transmission fluid on the way but you get the gist, you need fluids to be above minimum recommended level to complete the journey.

I assume that either his oil ran low or potholes wrecked the sump, the only way to have determined either was to inspect the car, by checking the oil level and looking under the vehicle, whenever he stopped for whatever reasons, which is how I determined that I lost transmission fluid and adopted proactive measures to ensure my journey was not terminated

The car tried. Even with the rebuilt engine, the car would have made the journey. I think it was negligence and not paying attention to the sound of the engine by nurey caused the knock. Upon leaving gwagwalada the next morning, as a good driver, he should have noticed the change of sound of the engine even within 10minutes of drive from gwag.

The engine was completely strained and stressed and op killed it for lack of attention.
I think op was stressed as his engine was and thus, he forgot to take notice of the sound of the engine.
Sorry, you can get someone to help you buy the engine at ladipo and then send it through luxurious buses coming that way. They will stop at zaria and drop your engine for you. You will pay for that though.

i wholeheartedly agree, not so much the engine that was at fault, but the driver.

Yes you are all right, I was negligent, anxious and fear of the unknown. But the worst is I remebered that I wanted to check a lot of things, but you have to realize I have never driven a faulty car before so I was confident I won't have engine problems, I actually stopped and check the under of the car and the wheels cause I was afraid it will fall off on the highway, reason why I never check the fluid was
1. I was over-confident that all fluids were intact (bad move)
2. I kept my attention fixed at the temperature guage (another bad move)

But all in all, what has happened has happened and crying over spilled milk won't change the hands of time. So fellows let's forget about what happened to the car and move on, My life is more precious than any Gold or silver.

So after all the mishaps and unexpected turn of events well I still have to give info on the journey which will serve as a summary

So the journey was interesting as well as a feat. It's not a journey that should be embarked by one individual cause if something happens, you may not be able to work it out, also do not shortcut things, it may affect you on the long run in an ungodly place.

The journey was interesting till I got to ibadan where I entered a crater it was dark but the car I was following I was too close to it and wham, I got a bent rim which I thank God, I was extremely lucky.

Moving on, I passed so many road block from soldiers to police to road safety but I wasn't delay cause I have immunity lol (Corper things), the roads were extremely filled with pot holes so driving at night might be suicidal and over taking trailers you must be careful cause they always sway from potholes you don't want them to sway onto you.

A 1.5L car can make the journey fine the disadvantage I had was my horse power, even cars that were delayed at check point still passed me easily, the most staggering of them is a venza V6 that car is a monster.

The ondo and okenne routes are extremely bad and dangerous, the sweetest route is the lokoja Abuja axis you can finish your spEedo there.

Above all be prepared well for the unknown when travelling but above all be confident and not b afraid.

I will entertain any question.

The bolded is the best thing you can do for yourself. If I happen to be in your shoes, that car won't go back with me to lagos. I will dispose off there in Zaria.

Lol.

Disposing a 'non-working' car in the middle of a journey amounts to a loss of value..

First, how much would the intending buyer pay....and oh.....how do you get a willing buyer....

Even good cars have been on hold for weeks in car lots waiting for willing buyers....except you want him to sell at around 100k

it would have been easier disposing off of the car in lagos besides, who will buy a supposed owned car by a seller with only photocopy documents. My original documents are in far away lagos.

The journey to the north is easy especially at night driving that car to the south is yet another feat on its own, Highway robbers, touts, ritualist, one chance guys and the list goes on. It will be en extreme challenge for me.

Haba, if you change that engine and follow all the suggestions above, that car will take you back to Lagos!

Which kind fear be this? Even those that are involved in accidents drive again, engine knock, you change am, you come de fear the motor? winch dey inside the motor? to change engine na to reset the moto!

change the engine, drive it back to lagos, sell it in lagos (if you must sell it) and recover your money!

Make this story end well, change engine, drive am go Lagos, if you do that, it will do loads to your confidence.

but to fix motor, come follow bus, me no like that kind ending!

Were there sufficient road signs on the highway to drive without a sat-nav?

Did you drive at any point in the dark especially routes you were not familiar with ?

Selling that car at zaria will be at a giveaway price. Buying a new engine brings that car back to life except the car has other issues we don't know about.

there were not enough road signs infact, you have to be extremely care and willing to do this two
1. Ask for routes even if you are doubting that route 1%, a traveller who asks for routes/way never gets lost.

2. Be willing to assist good looking people on your way, I picked people on my way to okenne around that owo express where a cement factory is, those people (only 2) helped me navigate easily to oba akoko, then I picked a guy from a filling station at okenne area, he was the one that saved me from journeying straight and showing me a left turning to abuja-lokoja express.

to asnwer your 2nd question, night journey on Nigerian express alone is very dangerous especially where ur headlamp visibility is low, but I made it a point of duty to follow cars it wasn't easy, my ride was under powered and those cars were extremely fast I did night journey and had to stop at abuja when the cars i followed weren't making things easy. So next day around 4am, I was able to follow a ford transit that was fast but not too fast.

There is no other issue, it's just when a mechanic you dont know his pedigree/qualification touches my car, I become jittery, but I said may be, until work is through I can't verify besides the car has served it's purpose and I want to upgrade.

But down to lagos would be another interesting journey, I guess I will make that a trip and not a journey.

If you have any body reliable either in Kano or Zaria... fix d car and hand it over to them to help u sell.. Lets not hear another story after fixing d engine and another magic happens in okene on ur way back... #Jstsaying

I can't do that if the car is fixed well, I prefer to take it back to lagos, only in lagos will I know the next move. Besides, once beaten twice shy, I won't be that negligent or forgetful again.
