Today's May 11, the 28th anniversary of the passing of one of the 20th Century's music icons, Robert Nesta Marley.
Marley is credited to have been largely responsible for the formalization of preceding rhythms  (sk'a) into 'reggae' or the 'regular' rhythm that we all know and love. Though a bunch of other pioneers like Jimmy Cliff and the Lee "Scratch' Perry of the Upsetters fame are regarded as the real founding fathers, nobody did more to stamp the consciousness of reggae into world music like Bob Marley. So many mega hits, such as Catch a Fire, Stir It Up, Trenchtown Rock, No Woman no Cry, One Love, Keep on Movin', Jammin', amongst other monster hits, signpost the short but definitive presence of this great son of Jamaica on the planet Earth.

Modern-day sounds, like hip hop, house, pop and the high tempo reggae evolution known as 'dancehall' or 'ragga', even our own contemporary music in Nigeria, can all trace its roots to reggae. Most church choirs in Nigeria have their beats characterized by the 'regular rhythm' synonymous with reggae, even the heavy use of the bass guitar in both secular and gospel music identifies with reggae.

Though gone for a while now, his music remains fresh and relevant, and you'll be surprised to find that his jams have been remixed by later greats, from UB40 to Busta Rhymes. What a guy he was!
