A topic was created telling us about how blessed Enugu is with coal and on that same thread I saw a comment telling Nigerians to do something at home and forget about drug trafficking and travelling abroad so I decided to go read more about coal on net
while carrying out my research I found out that

1) In 2011 China produced 3,520
million tonnes of coal – 49.5% of
7,695 million tonnes world coal
production.
In 2011 other large
producers were United States (993
million tonnes),
India (589),
European Union (576) and Australia
(416).
In 2010 the largest
exporters were Australia with 328
million tonnes (27.1% of world
coal export) and Indonesia with 316
million tonnes (26.1%) (wikipedia)

I was like with what we have where is Nigeria ?

let me even check world coal production list and I saw this

1 China 3,650.0 Coal production
2 United States 922.1 1 Coal production
3 India 605.8 Coal production
4 Australia 431.2 Coal production
5 Indonesia 386.0 Coal production
6 Russia 354.8 Coal production
7 South Africa 260.0 Coal production
8 Germany 196.2 Coal production
9 Poland 144.1 1 Coal production
10 Kazakhstan 116.4 1 Coal production
11 Colombia 89.2 1 Coal production
12 Ukraine 88.2 1 Coal production
13 Turkey 72.0 Coal production
14 Canada 66.9 Coal production
15 Greece 60.4 Coal production
16 Czech Republic 55.0 Coal production
17 North Korea 43.2 Coal production
18 Serbia 42.0 Coal production
19 Vietnam 41.9 Coal production
20 Mongolia 37.0 Coal production
21 Romania 34.1 Coal production
22 Bulgaria 32.8 Coal production
23 Thailand 18.3 Coal production
24 United Kingdom 16.8 Coal production
25 Mexico 13.8 Coal production
26 Bosnia and Herzegovina 13.9 Coal production
all in millions of tonnes (wikipedia)

I was still confused and I asked my self

what is happening to Nigeria coal production

and I surprisingly saw these

1) Nigeria still holds large coal
reserves, estimated to be at least
2 billion metric tons.

I was like that is good then I saw these

In 1999, the NCC lost its monopoly
over the Nigerian coal industry as
the Obasanjo government allowed
private companies to begin
operating coal fields in joint
ventures with the NCC, with an
eventual goal of completely
selling off the NCC's assets to
private investors. The Nigerian
government planned to sell 40%
to private investors and 20% to
the Nigerian public, while retaining
40%.
In 2002, work stopped at NCC-
operated mines. In 2003, the
Nigerian government announced
plans to create a technical
advisory committee that would be
tasked with reviving Nigeria's coal
industry.
By 2004, the technical committee
had still not issued their report,
and the NCC found itself almost
bankrupt . To raise funds, it began
to sell off some of its assets in
an attempt to pay off its
mounting debt , including salary
that was owed to its employees.
Additionally, the Enugu State
Government protested the planned
NCC privatization and demanded the
ability to consult with the
Federal Government on any
planned sale.
While references are made in the
news media to a possible sale of
the NCC, the Nigerian Bureau of
Public Enterprises, the government
body tasked with selling public
corporations, still lists the NCC as
an asset for sale on their website
as of April 2008, and no news
reports to date provide any
information about the supposed
sale. (wikipedia)

I felt discouraged with that

Still on the research I found out that coal can b use for

1)Electricity
Coal-fired power stations
generate 40% of global
electricity. Heat from
burning coal boils water,
and steam spins a
propeller. A machine turns
this into electricity.

2)Iron and steel
About 70% of steel is
created using coke, a high-
carbon fuel made from
coal. It is burned to melt
and remove impurities from
iron ore during iron and
steel production.

3)Shampoo
The dandruff and head
lice-zapping power of some
shampoos is thanks to
coal tar, a thick, dark-
coloured liquid produced
when goal is turned into
coke or coal gas fuel.

4)Plant fertiliser
Coal can be turned into
ammonia fertiliser by
breaking it into carbon
monoxide and hydrogen
gas. The hydrogen mixes
with nitrogen to make
ammonia.

5)Concrete
Concrete is a building
material made with cement.
Coal is burned to make
heat for cement
production. Waste ash from
coal-fired power stations
can replace cement in
concrete.

I will conclude by saying let's try to make good use of what we have

Its a bit late now, currently the world is campaigning against the use of Coal as a source of power because its the most polluting fuel. In fact, countries like U.S, China etc are reducing their coal planting and encouraging the use of renewable energy.

US already have plans to close the remaining 200 coal-fired plants soon.

Plenty, plenty..The truth is coal investment is reducing greatly, and by 2020 it will be fuel of developing and underdeveloped countries that can't afford renewable energy. Presently India is the only country its says is increased so far this year, so its near impossible to get any reasonable investor to invest in such.
