Since our govt is doing nothing to fix our roads and citizens are suffering and dying everyday, I suggest the govt privatize the roads. Let some rich Nigerians build the roads and collect toll fees for a specified period of time to recover their money back with interest. What do you think about the idea?
Re: Privatize All The Roads In Nigeria by sbo(m): 6:35pm On May 17, 2009
Will that be in public interest?

In a country where we do not laws to protect consumer rights, then we will be heading for a disaster. And that has always been the question mark around our so called privatisation. I do know any where in the world where economic reforms such as deregulation/privatisation have been implmented without laws to protect consumers - except in Nigeria. What will stop service providers from colluding?

As an example, that is why consumers are currently been ripped off in the telecoms sector.

Are you serious - What about the number of toll gates you will have everywhere. What about the taxes citizens pay.

To many questions

that'll jst drive the price of er'thing up. . .they shld only do it to key roads, like they've done wiv the lagos ibadan expressway!

We shouldn't create bigger problems in a bid to avoid solving the existing problems.

That's the issue but investors will be willing to invest in road projects if they are assured that we will continue to have a stable gvt that will not breach the contract if the govt changes eventually. They use this system in the US, why not Nigeria?.

I understand what you are saying but what about the govt owning an equitable share in the project + a few public shares so as to cut the wings of major investors if eventually they want to get smart with us. In America, they also build dual roads, the freeway is privately owned and tolls are charged while the feeder is open to the public only that it has traffic lights everywhere. That is a more expensive project but honestly, if they can privatise lagos-Benin and Benin Onitsha expressway, many people wouldn't mind.

It is a delicate situation that if badly managed can result in a few individuals, who have acquired their wealth by corrupt means, further holding the populace to ransom.

The road network in the US is well developed, and the private interest serves only to complement the efforts of the government. It is usually possible to avoid paying tolls in the US at the expense of heavier traffic or a longer route. This is not the case in Nigeria. Take for instance the Lagos-Benin Road, if you cannot afford the toll, which route do yo take?

Drive through Ibadan-Osun-Akure and jump out in Benin. It's longer, tiresome and the road is very very bad. You are right though.

The fact is that the money stolen would be used to build the roads and the right to bid for the roads can be taken if the roads are not OK. THIS IS LIKE PUT YOUR RICH TO WORK.

You just need to Set up a road authority in each state by the states themselves. The states will sell road blocks and then the bidders will get the road done and collect the tolls.

There will be a review if the roads are not ok and the users will have the option to use other better roads. MASS TRANSIT WILL BE EXEMPTED FROM ANY TOLL.

OUR RICH MEN IN NIGERIA MUST WORK WITH THEIR MONEY. THE GOVERNMENT MUST ENCOURAGE THEM TO WORK WETHER THEY STOLE THE MONEY OR NOT. IF THEY STOLE THE MONEY AND ARE CAUGHT THE LAW SHOULD TAKE ITS COURSE.

THE MONEY WASTED ON ROAD CONSTRUCTION IS SO MUCH THAT WE ARE PAY SEVERAL PERCENTAGE MORE THAN THE TRUE COST OF ROAD CONSTRUCTION AND ROAD MAINTENANCE.

Firstly you cannot place all roads under the jurisdiction of the states. There will always be federal highways.

Your idea would be nice, if the road authority would not be in collusion with the private investors. Nigeria is littered with federal parastatals that protect the interest of their friends at the expense of the Nigerian populace.
There is a difference between privatization and personalization.
Re: Privatize All The Roads In Nigeria by Enquirer: 2:05am On May 19, 2009
Federal highways, yes; bush paths no. Local and state roads should remain under government jurisdiction to remove the potential for abuse by so-called private investors who turn out be like the toll collectors of yore. By the way, if everything is privatized, what will then be the role of government?

Supported. Even if it's only 10 major highways, I wouldn't mind. The number of Nigerians that have died in Lagos-Ibadan expressway and Enugu-PH expressway is alarming.

There is no word about privatization that you do not like, Seun grin

Not everything can or should be privatized.

Great idea!
