IPOB Shuts Down Owerri Today by saintikechi(m): 1:26pm On Nov 13, 2015
Pro-Biafra protesters under the aegis of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) on Thursday brought Owerri, the Imo State capital to a standstill.

The Biafra agitators, who have so far taken their protests to all the major cities in the South East and South South geopolitical zones, defied the heavy presence of security agents and marched through the major roads in Owerri chanting Biafra slogans.

Hundreds of policemen de- ployed to the area did not confront or attempt to stop the protesters. The police merely followed them from one point to another.

Most of the protesters brandished the Biafra flags and carried placards with inscriptions such as "Release Kanu Now", "On Biafra We Stand", Kanu Has Done Nothing Wrong."

The protest caused grid- lock on the roads as most residents close their shops to join the agitators. The protesters received mass supports from the residents who cheered them on as they marched through the metropolis.

Mr. Ugonna Onuka, a resident said: "This is the time to prove to the world that the days of fear are over and with this kind of courage, Biafra is becoming a reality."

Commenting on the protest, the State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, said that his men allowed the protesters to move freely because they were not a threat to public peace. Enwerem said: "There was no need to violently confront them because they were peaceful and it is a dividend of democracy."

Meanwhile, the meeting of the South East governors, Ohaneze Ndigbo and other Igbo stakeholders called by Governor Rochas Okorocha on the growing protest by MASSOB and IPOB, scheduled for Owerri has been shifted to Enugu.

In a statement by the governor's Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, he said Enugu was considered because of the people's acceptance as the political capital of the region. He said the meeting will hold on November 17 and expressed the hope that the parley would douse the tension in the zone occasioned by the arrest of the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

Also yesterday, the authorities of the Nigeria Police Force debunked media reports that their officers shot, maimed and killed MASSOB and IPOB members during their protests in some states of the federation.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase, in a statement signed by the Force Spokesperson, Olabisi Kolawole, said that despite the acts of provocations dis- played by the MASSOB and IPOB by infringing on the rights of innocent Nigerians, the police maintained a high sense of professionalism and responsibility during the period of the protests.

The IGP therefore called on well-meaning Nigerians to disregard the allegations by these groups, describing it as false and a calculated attempt to attract undue attention and sympathy.

He also called on the leadership of Ohaneze to wade into what he described as "these superfluous protests" to save the law-abiding and innocent citizens in the affected states from the hardship being meted out by the groups.

He reminded those embarking on violent protests/assemblies that such actions are criminalised by law and that anybody arrested will be treated as such under the appropriate legislations.
