As Nigeria beat South Africa to the host status of the Etisalat Prize for Innovation Awards for the first time in the competition now in its fourth year, two Nigerian apps developers have clinched the top prizes in the competition which is awarded to innovators yearly. The previous three editions of the competition were activated in collaboration with AfricaCom in South Africa. The country also hosted the Award ceremonies during which the winners were awarded.

The two Nigerians were Obi Brown from Jos, Plateau State and Chijioke Ezegbo from Lagos. While Brown won five million naira cash in the most innovative product or service category, Ezegbo won the two million naira cash prize attached to the most innovative idea category. Besides, they were also rewarded with high-end mobile devices, Etisalat Mifi bundle with free data for one year as well as In-house Business Development Mentoring and product promotion using the Etisalat Online Platforms.

To win the Innovative Service category, Brown came up with Study Math Lab, a repository of over 1300 videos solving mathematics problems in over 49 topics in the NERDC curriculum for senior secondary school Math. The videos are solved by a team of Math teachers led by WAEC Chief Examiner. His Digital Back Books is the first ebook platform offering a subscription service in Nigeria where the digitalsavvy and mobile literate youth have an instant and unlimited access to book.

On his part, Ezegbo developed Dedicated Traffic Mapping Device (DTMD), code named Traffigator Traffigator, a GPRS enabled traffic navigation device with voice over interface which is affixed to a vehicle windshield to help users navigate their way through traffic by accessing real-time traffic situation and suggesting shorter and alternate routes.
