Metro UK: Boko Haram Deadlier Than ISIS by Nobody: 6:35pm On Nov 18, 2015 |
Because of their attacks on the West, our headlines and column inches are often filled with reports of Islamic State. But, Boko Haram are actually the world’s most deadly terrorist group. Earlier today we reported they killed 32 and injured 80 in a night-time suicide bomber in Nigeria. Based in Nigeria, Boko Haram are responsible for more deaths than any other extremist organisation – including Isis – in the last year. In 2014 Boko Haram slaughtered 6,644 people – in comparison with 6,073 deaths caused by Isis. Recent data published by the Institute for Economics and Peace in the Global Terrorism Index reveals Nigeria is second only to Iraq for the country with the most deaths caused by acts of terrorism. Nigeria ranks higher than Afghanistan, Pakistan and even Syria, the country’s increase in terrorism death toll is the highest ever recorded. The report also states deaths caused by terrorism since the year 2000 have increased nine-fold. ‘Since the beginning of the 21 century, there has been a nine-fold increase in the number of deaths from terrorism, rising from 3,329 in 200 to 32,658 in 2014. ‘From 2013 to 2014 Nigeria witnessed the largest increase in terrorist deaths ever recorded by any country, increasing by 300 per cent to 7,512 fatalities,’ the report stated. Most attacks committed by Boko Haram occur in northern Africa, but they have previously targeted Chad and Cameroon. They are also behind the kidnap of 200 female pupils of Chibok School which sparked the #BringBackOurGirls campaign. Boko Haram have previously had links to al-Qaeda. In April a video was posted to Boko Haram’s Twitter account apparently showing the group’s leader Abubakar Shekau pledging allegiance to Isis. In the announcement, he’s reported to have declared: ‘We announce our allegiance to the caliph… and will hear and obey in times of difficulty and prosperity. ‘We call on all Muslims everywhere to pledge allegiance to the caliph.’ Boko Haram caused more deaths than Isis last year Cc Lalasticlala metro.co.uk/2015/11/18/heres-the-terrorist-group-more-deadly-than-islamic-state-5509836/
