Denmark is a country which is well-known far and wide for its fine educational system, excellent modern facilities and knowledgeable teaching staff and faculty. Denmark is located in northern Europe and is part of Scandinavia. Denmark consists of the Jutland peninsula, the larger islands of Zealand, Funen, and Lolland-Falster and 429 other named islands between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, 72 of which are inhabited.Nowhere in Denmark is more than 50 km from the sea. And just a few kilometres from Denmark’s major cities of Aarhus and Copenhagen you find idyllic villages and pristine woodlands and lakes.

The Danish educational system is designed to promote creativity, innovation, analytical and critical thinking. As a student in Denmark, you will be met by an up-to-date learning environment where you can learn from industry experts and undertake internships in internationally recognised organisations.

The Nordic countries tend to be the most generous, although Finland and Sweden recently joined Denmark in introducing fees set by higher education institutions for international students. All countries, except Iceland and Norway, now charge non-European students.

Higher education in Denmark is free for students from the EU/EEA and for students participating in an exchange programme. All students taking part-time courses pay fees set by the same higher education institutions. For all other students annual tuition ranges from 6,000 to 16,000 (DKK 45,000-120,000).

You also do not pay for tuition if you have a:

-Permanent residence permit
- Temporary residence permit that can be upgraded to a permanent one
- Parent from a non-EU/EEA country who is already working in Denmark

Students from outside EU/EEA/Switzerland will be charged a fee when applying for a residence permit (visa) to study in Denmark.

Danish Scholarships and Grants

According to a memorandum from the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Education can now apply to SU student loans and grants if they work more than 10-12 hours a week and fulfill certain conditions. Non-Danish EU citizens should have the same rights as Danes to receive access to Danish SU student grants, according to a recent EU-court ruling, and just confirmed in a deal between government and opposition parties. This is so long as they are employees or workers.

Here is who is eligible, and who is not.

Eligible for SU

You are eligible if you are:
• an EU or EEA citizen
• work 10 to 12 hours a week
• are studying at a Danish university for a full degree (that is, not through an exchange programme)

Not eligible for SU

You are not eligible if you are
• a non-EU or non-EEA citizen
• don't have a job of 10-12 hours a week
• are an exchange student at a Danish university while doing a full degree at your home university

How much is SU?

The present SU rate is DKK 5.753 (approximately EUR 750) a month before tax for students not living with parents. Extra support is available for those who support children themselves.

However there are concern regarding the students who were not able to complete their studies in Denmark because they had to complete the obligatory ten hours of work.

Students who Immigrate to Denmark can gain a lot of benefit from the SU grant that this country is offering to overseas students. Also, studying in the top-notch universities here can help in building a bright future ahead which will build a good career for you.
