CSKA Moscow 0 Wolfsburg 2: Schurrle eliminates CSKA's side

Andre Schurrle came off the bench to score twice and earn Wolfsburg a potentially vital Champions League win over CSKA Moscow.
Wolfsburg remain on course to reach the Champions League round of 16 after substitute Andre Schurrle's double earned a 2-0 win away to CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.
Defeat for the Russian side eliminates them from the competition and they were the architects of their own downfall as goalkeeper and captain Igor Akinfeev's painful individual error saw him concede for the 36th European match in succession Schurrle the beneficiary.
Schurrle added a second in the 88th minute to make sure of all three points for the Bundesliga side.
The away win sees Wolfsburg climb to first place in Group B on nine points, two ahead of Manchester United and three ahead of PSV ahead of their match at Old Trafford later in the day.
CSKA remain bottom on four points and are left to contend for a place in the Europa League round of 32 by finishing third, provided PSV do not win at Old Trafford.

Man United held to goalless draw by PSV

The Red Devils again looked short in the final third, with Anthony Martial’s effort the most memorable in the first half, when Jeroen Zoet saved his shot from the far side of the box.Jesse Lingard, who has been one of United’s bright sparks in recent weeks, looked brightest in the first period and he should have scored 20minutes from the end, squandering a chance and failing to test the goalkeeper.

Before kick-off, some of the travelling Dutch fans made a kind gesture in wishing Red Devils defender Luke Shaw a speedy recovery, after the young English left-back suffered a double leg fracture in the previous tie in Eindhoven.

After a quiet start to the match, another tribute took place on seven minutes. With it being ten years to the day since United great George Best’s passing, fans around Old Trafford held up phone marks in tribute to the Northern Irishman. Louis van Gaal’s men soon began to look lively, first when captain Wayne Rooney made ground down the right before pulling a cross along the box, Martial stepping over the ball for Lingard in space, but the in-form youngster’s touch was heavy.
Daley Blind’s floated corner after half an hour produced a good chance for the hosts, as Morgan Schneiderlin’s effort was saved well by keeper Zoet. The Dutch giants soon made a dangerous break, with the ball making its way to Jorrit Hendrix, whose curling effort was met, and well held, by De Gea. Martial had the best chance of the match as Lingard’s shot deflected into the Frenchman’s path. With the outside of his boot, he struck from ten yards but it was straight at Zoet, who also parried ex-PSV man Depay’s shot before the interval, after good work by the ever-improvingChris Smalling.

The home side looked livelier early in the second half, with the realisation of how important a win would be going into the final group match. Depay had another effort saved before he was substituted against his former club, but he was largely ineffective on the night. The visitors reminded United of their threat when Davy Propper went close, setting himself up on the edge of the box, juggling the ball on themove before firing a volley into the hands of De Gea.

Substitute Ashley Young looked to make an impact, but his cross into a dangerous part of the box was not met by Rooney or fellow substitute Marouane Fellaini. Eindhoven attacked on the break and it looked like they could punish United before Jurgen Locadia selfishly opted to shoot, pulling the ball wide at the near post. A 72nd-minute chance summed up Van Gaal’s side’s night. Young’s cross was deflected and it bounced into the path of Lingard, who lacked composure, failed to get over the ball and he struck over the bar from 12 yards.

Juventus defeat Man City to go top of table

Manchester city had already sealed qualification to the knockout stages in the previous round of matches but would draw one of the tournament favourites in the last 16 by virtue of finishing second.

Mario Mandzukic ultimately proved the match winner in the early stages, shrugging off the attentions of Nicolas Otamendi to turn home from close range. Fernando and Alvaro Morata both struck the woodwork in the second half before Raheem Sterling squandered a brilliant late chance to equalise as the Italian champions leapfrogged their opponents in Group D.

With City looking to avoid back-to-back defeats for the first time this season after a run of nine games unbeaten, Manuel Pellegrini opted to drop Sterling to the bench after a chastening night against former team Liverpool at the weekend.Fernandinho looked the most likely to find a breakthrough in the early stages, firing wide from 20 yards and then inexplicably blazing over when the Brazilian’s composure deserted him.And the City midfielder’s profligacy was punished after 18 minutes. Paul Pogba broke quickly into the visitors’ half, fed Alex Sandro who whipped an inviting cross for Mandzukic to guide past Hart from eight yards out.

City, and Otamendi in particular, felt aggrieved as Mandzukic appeared to push the Argentine defender to the floor but their appeals fell on deaf ears. Juventus were now in the ascendancy and Hart brilliantly sprang low to his left to keep out a fierce Mandzukic half volley not long after. City were struggling to create an opening but were nearly gifted an equaliser when Aguero pounced on a wayward Claudio Marcisio back pass, only to have his efforts smothered by veteran Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Both sides were then denied agonizingly by the woodwork after the break. Fernando appeared to have equalised for City but for Buffon’s brilliant reflex save as he tipped the Brazilian’s header onto the post. And City were left releasing a huge sigh of relief almost immediately AS the post denied both Morata and Paulo Dybala in quick succession with the visitors' defence all at sea. Pellegrini’s side were again indebted to Hart’s awareness with just over 10 minutes remaining, blocking Morata’s goal bound effort with his right foot after the Spanish striker had left Otamendi for dead. And substitute Sterling then should have earned a share of the spoils, somehow contriving to skew wide from Kevin De Bruyne’s perfect cross with the goal at his mercy.

Elsewhere in the group, Borussia Monchengladbach ended Sevilla's slimchances of qualification with an absorbing 4-2 win in Germany.

Manchester United coach worried after PSV draw

Louis van Gaal admits he is "worried" about Manchester United's lack of goals after their 0-0 draw with PSV on Wednesday night.

United's goalless draw in the Champions League leaves them in second place in Group B, just a point above PSV in third and facing a trip to first-place Wolfsburg in the final game.

A win against the German side would see United finish top of the group but if PSV win at home to bottom side CSKA Moscow, a defeat or draw for United in Wolfsburg would see them drop out of the competition and into the Europa League.

United have scored just five goals in their last seven games in all competitions, and Van Gaal said: "Of course I am worried [about the lack of goals], but I know also goals are coming and going. It's not a consequence of good performances and bad performances.

"Also today we could have scored at least three goals. They were not the most difficult chances, but we didn't score and the next game you can score out of nothing. That's football.

"We are still second so we are still in the qualifying position I believe. We have to do it in Wolfsburg. That's more difficult, it [would have been] much more easier to do it tonight.

"Now our efforts in away games is much better than last year so we have to do it in Wolfsburg.

"We have won also our home match against Wolfsburg so why we can't win in Wolfsburg? Our away efforts are much higher than last year as you know."

United struggled to break down a dogged PSV side throughout the contest and having left Juan Mata on the bench, Van Gaal did not bring the Spaniard on until the 85th minute.

United's hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League hang in the balance

No England Return for BWP

Free scoring in the MLS, Bradley Wright-Phillips has been linked with a move to Premier League strugglers Bournemouth in recent weeks. He's told Sky Sports there has been no contact from the Cherries, though.

"If anyone starts scoring, people always go linking them to a team but if I'm being honest I haven't heard anything," the 30-year-old said.

"Besides I wouldn't want a phone call about that just yet because we've got a big game for New York Red Bulls, and this is something we've had our heart set on since the beginning of the season."

Palace Consider Fresh Slimani Approach

Crystal Palace were recently rumoured to have been met with rejection after making an offer for Sporting CP striker Islam Slimani, but that hasn't put the Eagles off.

Last week's reports from Portugal said the initial Palace bid was around £8.8m. Now, according to the Daily Mirror, the offer will be closer to £14m, which would appear to match the lower end of Sporting's valuation, based on those initial Portuguese estimates.

Newcastle Eye Premier League Pair

Newcastle manager Steve McLaren is eager to bolster his squad this winter and a story from the Daily Mail has named Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey as a Tyneside target, although it won't be easy to prise him away from the Liberty Stadium.

The same report also claims that the Magpies are 'pushing hard' in their attempt to sign Andros Townsend from Tottenham. The proposed deal is a loan with a view to a permanent transfer and could be completed almost as soon as the January window opens.

It could be a busy period for the club as the speculation linking Newcastle with Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost seems to have now resurfaced too.

West Ham Planning Bilic/Tore Reunion

Michael Antonio's time at West Ham could be about to get even more miserable, with manager Slaven Bilic reportedly looking at a reunion with Turkish winger Gokhan Tore, a player he managed at Besiktas.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Hammers boss is still a big fan of the 23-year-old and could ask his superiors to try and land Tore in January.

Mirallas Unlikely to Leave Everton for France

Kevin Mirallas has persistently been linked with moves away from Everton in recent years, but he is unlikely to join a club in France, despite recent rumoured interest from Marseille and Monaco.

Former Liverpool director and recruitment expert Damien Comolli believes Paris Saint-Germain are the only French team in that could even afford the winger.

"I honestly do not see who could afford him in France, except for Paris," he told Le Phoceen.

"Unless he lowered his salary I do not see how that's possible."

Man City Resist Nasri Approach

Samir Nasri may be suffering from injuries on a regular basis - he won't be seen again until well into 2016 - but Manchester City apparently do not want to let him go, even with a good offer on the table.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Sky Blues have rejected a £10m approach from Juventus and are adamant that Nasri is not for sale. It is implied the Italians have made more than one firm enquiry, but City are not playing ball.

Arsenal Face Strong Isco Competition

Arsenal will have to do some midfield rebuilding over the next few months, with several ageing individuals expected to be released in the summer. One named target is Real Madrid's Isco, but signing the Spaniard may be easier said than done.

According to a report originating from Tuttosport in Italy, Juventus are preparing to make a £28m bid in January. Massimiliano Allegri has admired Isco for a while, so the Gunners may have their work cut out. Even Liverpool are rumoured to have enquired about price.

Chelsea to Launch Audacious Kane Bid

Chelsea are believed to have concerns over Diego Costa after his recent falling out with Jose Mourinho and that could lead the reigning Premier League champions to go after a new striker in the coming months.

According to the Daily Mail, a very ambitious summer swoop for Harry Kane is on the cards. Tottenham flat out refused to sell to Manchester United this summer, but Chelsea may as well at least try their luck...

Manchester United Still Monitoring Hummels

Mats Hummels flirted with the idea of leaving Borussia Dortmund over the summer before eventually opting to stay. But fresh rumours have him ready to leave and Manchester United are apparently ready and waiting.

According to a report from Bild in Germany, Hummels is struggling to play under new Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel and that lead him to ask for a move at the end of the season. If that is the case, Manchester United are likely to be at the front of the queue, having maintained interest since trying to sign the classy defender last time his future was an issue.

Messi,Suarez and Neymar outscored every clubs in Europe in 2015

Barcelona trio Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar have outscored every club in Europe in 2015.
That is despite Messi missing the last two months with knee ligament damage and Neymar suffering from mumps at the start of the campaign, which ruled him out for four matches.

The South American trio have scored 121 between them this calendar year, with Messi leading the way on 41 and Suarez and Neymar right behind the Argentine on 39 apiece.

Barca's combined total without them is a mere 37.

Overall, the Catalans have scored 158 goals since the turn of the year, which is 36 more than Bayern Munich, who are the only club to have outscored MSN in that time.

Paris Saint-Germain are three behind them with 118, with Real Madrid (110) the only other club to reach triple figures.

Manchester City and Juventus have scored 89 goals each.

Messi told Marca, of the trio's on-field chemistry: "I’m not sure if this is one of the keys to the team’s success, but it is true we get on really well and try to enjoy every game we play.

"We try to do things well, we like to play, we feel a responsibility and we like to win. We get along."
And when asked if this year's Ballon d'Or be dominated by the Blaugrana, the 28-year-old said: "I hope so [that we’re all in the top three], but it’s not something that we are going to obsess over. I’m sure they think the same way."

Man United confirm loan deal for youngster

Manchester United today confirmed via their official Twitter account that James Wilson will spend the rest of the season on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Manager Louis van Gaal, was reluctant to send the young striker out on loan at the start of the season because he was unsure how the campaign at Old Trafford would develop. However the decision has now been made that the 19-year-old needs to be playing regularly to develop further, so the England U21 forward is set to join Chris Hughton’s Brighton side in the second tier.

Wilson has made just one Premier League appearance this season for the Red Devils, coming on as a substitute for the final 11 minutes of the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal. The youngster was afforded more chances last term by Van Gaal, playing in 13 league games and scoring one goal for the club.

Brighton currently sit second in the Championship, with just goal difference separating them from Hull City in top spot. However they’re the only side still undefeated in the division, as they look to reach the top tier of English football for the first time since 1983.

Wilson could make his debut for the Seagulls in the match against Birmingham City at the weekend.
