Don’t make English, Maths compulsory for students seeking admission – Okorocha tells universities

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has requested universities in the country and other institutions of higher learning to stop making credit passes in English language and Mathematics compulsory for those seeking admission.

He lamented that the practice of making the two subjects compulsory for admissions has aborted the ambition of many brilliant students who could, for one reason or the other, not credit both subjects, to further their education.

The Governor, who spoke yesterday when the Registrar of the National Examination Council, NECO, Prof. Abdulrashid Garba visited him at the Government House Owerri, with his team, noted that the time has come for all relevant bodies to help the education sector and assist students with the ambition of pursuing higher education.

He suggested that the stakeholders can do this by pushing for an end to the demand that a prospective student must credit English language and Mathematics to gain admission, adding that the subjects relevant to the courses the individual students want to pursue in higher institutions should rather be made mandatory.

Okorocha further opined that the rule that made it mandatory for Nigerian students to credit English and Mathematics before they could proceed to higher institutions, has forced some students to indulge in some unconventional activities to pass them, while some of the brilliant ones who could not make the subjects are made to remain at home.

Unless indigenous languages are elevated to the same level as English and also made alternative to compulsory English (especially Hausa), then this proposal is pointless because it has been working fine.

Dumbest statement ever made by a serving governor. This man probably thinks that "shebi you people are coming today" kind of english is enough for university level education. He forgets (if ever he has been to school) that those university books are are not written in igbo, youruba or hausa but in academic english. Without a fair amount of numerical, comprehension and communication skill, they are bound to join the growing number of educated illiterates.

english language should be left alone. maths on the other hand should only be offered at will for art student nd science. i cnt imagine a lawyer calculating in d court to find d probability of winning a case or not neither can i imagine a doctor measuring d diameter nd circumference of the vjay of the pregnant woman.
