Eighteen hospital patients died when heavy rains and flooding disabled generators in the southern Indian
state of Tamil Nadu.
Officials are investigating reports of negligence by staff at the facility in the state capital Chennai, which is suffering from unprecedented floods.

Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan said floodwater entered the room housing the generators, cutting off power to the building and switching off the ventilators in the intensive care unit.

The power cut led to the death of the 18 patients over a period of two to three days, Mr Radhakrishnan said.
Soldiers using boats have rescued thousands of residents marooned in high-rise buildings and launched massive relief operations to provide food
and medicines.

Although the floods have now begun to recede, vast swathes of Chennai and neighbouring districts were still under 8ft to 10ft (2.5m to 3m) of water, with tens
of thousands of people in state-run relief camps.
Many people in the region are complaining that aid and clean drinking water has yet to reach some districts, four days after the deluge first arrived.
