Former Congo coach Claude Leroy is adamant that Senegal have what it takes to claim continental glory at the 2015 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations on home soil.

The veteran French tactician believes the young Lions are technically, tactically and physically superior to Nigeria, their opponents in the semifinals of the tournament.

However, Leroy hopes the Senegalese will remain mentally strong in their bid for a spot at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

“Senegal ended the group stage with the best defence and the best attack of the tournament, and they looked very well organized tactically,” the 67-year-old commented.

“This 4-3-3 suits the squad perfectly and it is why they are my favourites of the competition," added Leroy, who enjoyed a spell at the helm of the Teranga Lions between 1989 and 1992.

“I would say that their only problem could be emotion. It is not a question of pressure, but of emotion if they start thinking about their Brazilian dream.

“Every African youngster dreams about playing at the Maracana.

“If they are mentally strong, I think that they will be technically, tactically and physically slightly superior to Nigeria.”

The match will kick off at Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor this Wednesday.

Senegal U-23 boss wary of ‘very experienced’ Nigeria



Senegal U-23 coach Serigne Saliou Dia insisted that they must keep their focus ahead of their clash with Nigeria in the semifinals of the 2015 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations.

The tournament hosts finished top of Group A to book their spot in the last four of the competition, after enjoying consecutive victories over South Africa, Tunisia and Zambia.

And the young Lions will be determined to extend their winning run against the Nigerians and punch their ticket for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

“What is important is that we remain true to ourselves. We must rely on our qualities and keep our values,” Dia told the media.

“We must try to avoid mistakes. We are going to impose our game so we can qualify,” added the tactician, who, however, does not underestimate their opponents.

“It is going to be a very tough match. It is a semifinal and a qualifier to the Rio Summer Olympics. Nigeria are used to these competitions and are very experienced.”

The game will kick off at Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor on Wednesday.
