Anti-Social Media Bill Re-Introduced By Bala Na’Allah / No Anti-social Media Bill Before The Senate – Saraki / Sahara Reporters And Ben Murray-Bruce 'Fight' Over Social Media Bill(Tweets) (2) (3) (4)
Why Government Want To Pass "Anti-social Media Bill" by FIR: 5:23am On Dec 07, 2015 |
Recently Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah, a member of President Muhammadu Buhari’s All People’s Congress party, seeks to criminalize two types of behavior. First, it proposes a sentence of up to seven years in prison or a five million naira fine (US$25,000) for “anyone who intentionally propagates false information that could threaten the security of the country or that is capable of inciting the general public against the government through electronic message.” Second, it seeks to criminalize anyone disseminating via text message, Twitter, WhatsApp, or any other form of social media an “abusive statement” intending to “set the public against any person and group of persons, an institution of government or such other bodies established by law.” The penalty for this is up to two years in prison or a two million naira fine (about US$10,000), or both. Let make members of the Senate to face and tackle problems that are making our young men and woman to die in the desert of Niger and the ltalian sea of Lampeduesa due to lack of employment and hope of better life in Nigeria, innocent persons are being killed in our Churches and Mosque by Boko Haram, Nigeria is having housing deficit and lack manufacturing industries primarily due to lack of constant electricity supply , 80% of the goods we consume or use are imported including petroleum products , within the last three months our naira has remain depreciated. If change is to closed our mouth and perpetually allow us to look up to foreign countries for employment and consumable goods while we remain in electricity darkness with long queue in our petrol stations we will irresistibly say no to cruel change, this social bill is not what we need at the moment, can you imagine that in a country were people pay for electricity not consumed as fixed charges Government can't sincerely tell us it will pay the unemployed N5000, rather this money if actually available should be used to give us free electricity and build more refineries and stop importation of fuel, please let join hands together to tell our Senate Members to pass bills that are national interest and not group interests, the "social media" bill is meant to protect a fail government in the future and in the process a lots of innocent social media activist will be sent to jail, let say no to this bill, l foresee this government not making any positive change at the end of four years, and the social media is the tool we will use to shout out if this government refuse to address critical issues such as unemployment, Fixed charges and epileptic power supply , Lack of availability of petrol, pot hole roads , flooded streets etc, before the next election we will used the social media to review the the performance of the government of GMB , therefore we need social media freedom of speech as we did for GEJ. the reason why the APC senator has move to present the "Anti- Social Media Bill" is to silent social media activist from criticizing the this APC government whom l think may not be able to fulfill it campaign promises and meet the expectations of the masses, let the APC senator government know that what Nigerians need is a law that will enhance our welfare and not re-peeling laws that are already in existence, currently there are laws against defamation of character and so on, why should a senator whom we are paying to represent us abandon, the enormous problems that we have as a country and be disusing issues that of interest to a group of persons in government who don't want to be told the truth, our senators should please pass laws that will enhance our developmental strides, the strides of suitably qualified graduates who are unemployed, the strides of business owners who lack constant electricity supply, the stride of all well-meaning Nigerians that lack financial empowerment. |

They won't succeed with that bill or do they think we are in the stone age. The social media is the last hope of the common man and i put it to them that in an unjust society silence is a big crime... |

I support the bill wholly. Maybe those who are guilty of posting fictitious stories and lies without verifiable evidences might not like it. The social media has been abused over the years and it's negatives are likely to cause more harm than good so it's freedom should be checked. Before you criticise Nigeria, go to place like China you'll discover that they banned the use of Facebook, Twitter and other social media outfits over the years to regulate freedom of access to information. Moreover, the FOI act is there to aid and guide any curious mind |

@Aufbauh With the prevailing problems of epileptic power supply, inability to refine petroleum products to meet domestic consumption needs, devaluation of naira, Unemployment: Nigeria sitting on gun powder – Obasanjo (http://thenationonlineng.net/unemployment-nigeria-sitting-on-gun-powder-obasanjo/) Pot hole high ways (Benin City Lagos road and Benin City Abuja road) debating bill to control social media means there is an alleged plot against the people, a plot not to satisfy the yearnings and aspirations of the people, if care is not taken to address the above issues the gun powder must explode |
