You can't teach an old dog new tricks, so President Buhari is and will remain thesame as General Buhari. General Buhari as a military officer was involved in a series of coup detats, but the one in which he played the most prominent role was the one he led which sacked the second republic in 1984 when he was a G0C. An officer under him reported the coup to him when he got wind of it at the stage of planning but General Buhari locked him up until the coup was executed and the second republic truncated. On becoming the head of state, one of his first few actions was to cancel the metro line project which Alhaji Jakande's government of Lagos state had already part paid for to the tune of 50 million dollars. Lagos state government lost that money. Considering that a brand new peugeout car cost less than ten thousand naira in 1984 but up to four million naira today, we might say the lost down payment is worth more than 20 billion naira in today's money but this calculation is without factoring in over 30 years of inflation, if we factor in inflation, the value of the money will skyrocket. If we say the FG should make thesame percentage of total present cost of the metroline that Lagos made in 1983 as downpayment, then maybe the required payment may cross the billion dollar mark today. Lagos state should move to recover this money from the FG in whatever form, since President Buhari was representing the FG at that time. He has been drawing pensions as ex head of state of Nigeria for decades, so Nigeria is liable. Lagos should move to recover this money. If not for the General Buhari coup, Lagos would have a metro line today and transportation in the city would have been much less stressful. If Lagos had a metro line, Kano would follow, so would Oyo, Rivers and etc. Nigeria would have been much different. So it is easy to see what Nigeria lost. I have to add that if a Yoruba President stopped a project in such a manner in Kano or Enugu, I would immediately lose all respect for him. General Buhari's truncation of the second republic was a major setback for Nigeria, just like Major Nzeogwu's truncation of the first republic. President Buhari removed a government but turned mainly on opposition politicians, hounding them into jail. Most of these people jailed were honest politicians. People like Pa Ajasin who had only one house that he built as a school teacher was jailed purportedly for corruption . General Buhari set up tribunals to try him and one military tribunal after the other discharged and acquitted him but General Buhari kept him in prison nevertheless. Another was Vice President Ekwueme who came out of government poorer than he went in. He was kept in Kirikiri and etc. Some politicians of the ruling party known by all to have corruptly enriched themselves were handed over to the government on being arrested by civillians at the airport in Lagos but they somehow escaped to appear in London after a few weeks. Such was the anti corruption crusade of General Buhari during his first coming.

General Buhari superitended over a government that decided that people who tamper with NEPA installations and telephone installations be executed by firing squad. Tampering may mean repairing your own connection. Above all, General Buhari's government executed people with a retroactive decree for an offense that carried a few months imprisonment as punishment as at the time it was committed. I remember telling someone that the only commeasurate restitution for this is execution, but President Buhari as so far gotten away with it and his other many wrongs. He did all these in the full glare of the public and with no remorse just like Adolf Hitler of the German third reich. I don't know which is worse, doing wrong in the full glare of the public or hiding to do it. Now, if you were President Buhari and, Lagosians, friends and relatives of Pa Ajasin and etc come to ask you to be their leader, will you accept the offer? A person who reflects deeply will quickly nominate another person, but President Buhari accepted the offer. 50 million dollars down the drain for Lagos in 1984 money, many unlawfully detained with some of them dying as a result and etc. Nigerians voted for him including all members of my own family, believing his claim to be a poor man who for all his years in the military as head of state, out of military as PTF chairman may not be worth even one million dollars. People voted for him believing he has only 150 cows and maybe three houses. He further heightened the euphoria by promising to publicly declare his assets and make all his appointees do thesame. Now, a media house has reported that Mallam El Rufai of Kaduna is worth 90 billion naira, he threatened to sue them, the media house maintained the claim and we have not heard anything since. We hardly can do anything about that since it is not customary for our politicians to come out and declare their assets. They will be embarrassed and we will be embarrassed. This has been going on for decades. However, General Buhari promised a change and got elected based on this. If he does not keep to the promise of publicly declaring his assets, then he did obtain votes by fraudulent means. In the main time, people should stop the talk about his honesty, integrity and etc. There is no longer any basis for that but the real deal is that he ought to resign as President if he can not publicly declare his assets as promised. That is the only honourable path left to thread. That is the minimum for him to achieve any kind of legitimacy. To cancel out your wrong is not by praying to God as many may think. It is by restitution and subsequent aggressive good deeds.
