Having topped our Champions
League group, the Blues will face
one of the sides finishing as
runners-up in their section in the
last 16 when the competition
resumes in February.
The fact we finished top of our group
means we will play the second leg of our
last-16 tie at Stamford Bridge.
We are unable to be paired with Dynamo
Kiev in Monday’s draw as they were also in
Group G, while Arsenal are also ruled out
due to the fact you cannot be drawn
against teams from the same country at
this stage of the tournament.
Here, we take a look at the six potential
opponents Jose Mourinho's side could face.

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN
Chelsea have faced the French champions
in our last two Champions League
campaigns, winning an epic quarter-final
with a second leg turnaround at the Bridge
in 2014 (below) and then losing out last
term on away goals in the last 16. The side
from the French capital finished behind
Real Madrid in Group A, but equalled a
competition record by conceding only one
goal in the group stage. Former Chelsea
defender David Luiz is still at PSG, who are
currently 15 points clear at the top of Ligue.

PSV EINDHOVEN
Qualifiers at the expense of Manchester
United in Group B, PSV Eindhoven became
the first Dutch side to progress through a
Champions League group since they
reached the quarter-finals in the 2007/08
season. Chelsea have not met a side from
the Netherlands since the 1999/00
campaign, when we were Champions
League debutants and defeated Feyenoord
in the second group stage of the
competition. Managed by former Dutch
international Phillip Cocu, PSV are currently
third in the Eredivisie. Our former player
Jeffrey Bruma is a regular part of their
defence.

BENFICA
The Portuguese side are no strangers to
Chelsea, with our two most recent European
triumphs involving a meeting with Benfica
along the way. In 2012 we defeated them in
the quarter-finals of the Champions League
(below) on our way to lifting the trophy in
Munich before another dramatic tussle in
2013. On that occasion, the Europa League
final in Amsterdam was the setting for
Branislav Ivanovic to head home a last-
minute winner to secure the trophy for the
Blues.
This is only the second time in eight
attempts they have progressed from a
Champions League group stage, finishing
behind Atletico Madrid in Group C. A
meeting with Benfica would provide
Ramires with an opportunity to face his
former club.

JUVENTUS
Runners-up behind Manchester City in
Group D, Juventus lost in the final to
Barcelona last season and are currently on
a 16-match unbeaten run at home in
European competition. They qualified at our
expense from the group stage in 2012/13,
when the Blues accrued the highest points
tally in group-stage history without making
it into the knockout round, but we defeated
the Old Lady of Italian football in 2008/09
when the two sides met in the last 16.
Juventus are currently fifth in Serie A.

ROMA
The Giallorossi made it this far by the skin
of their teeth – only six points were
required to reach the knockout phase
behind Barcelona in Group E, which is a
competition record they now hold along
with Zenit St Petersburg. This season marks
50 years since we faced Roma in a brutal
Fairs Cup tie, which included a Terry
Venables hat-trick and an intimidating
return leg in the Italian capital. We also
met them in the group stage of the
2008/09 (below) Champions League, when
both sides took a win apiece.

GENT
The surprise package of the group stage,
Gent became the first Belgian side to make
it in to the last 16 of the competition since
Anderlecht in 2000/01. Winners of the
Jupiler League last term, Gent are making
their Champions League debut and any
meeting with the Blues would also be a
first, although we have previously met both
Genk and Anderlecht in Europe’s premier
club competition. They earned their place in
the last 16 with a second-place finish in
Group H behind Zenit.
