Shocker: Randy LG boss forgets N2.6m in hotel room

BARRY AGBANIGBI, Asaba

The ownership of N2.6 million cash said to have been discovered in a suite in one the leading hotels in Asaba, the Delta State capital, is now causing ripples.

Already, a prominent politician who checked out of the room before the strange discovery has denied knowledge of it.

The politician, who was later identified as one of the local government chairmen in the state, reportedly booked and checked into the hotel suite with a mistress using the name of his aide.

The amount in one thousand naira denomination was reportedly found in the hotel suite stacked in a carton of Maggi-Cube by a female cleaner while dressing the room.Saturday Champion learnt on good authority that the female cleaner reportedly alerted the management of the hotel when she discovered that what she thought to be maggi-cubes turned out to be cash.

It was reportedly discovered in the wardrobe of the room where it may have been hidden for safe-keeping following the influx of visitors to the politician.

The politician who had made a deposit for two days reportedly hurried out of the room barely a few hours after checking in.

Saturday Champion learnt that immediately the money was discovered in the room, the hotel management contacted the man who introduced himself as an aide to the local government chairman through the phone number used for the booking of the room.

"We waited for a few hours after this contact without any response. We told him through a mobile phone that we were from the hotel, but there were indications that the politician may have mistaken us for security agents from the telephone conversation we had with him," said an inside hotel source.

"When all efforts failed to reach out to the owner, we had to contact the police who promised a fair investigation into it", the source further said.

While confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Charles Muka, an assistant superintendent of police (ASP), said all efforts will be made to trace the ownership.

"It is possible that the politician in question was not too sure of the identities of those who tried to reach out to him.

"The politician’s fear may have been prompted by series of swoops in recent times on local government chairmen by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) over mismanagement of local government funds," Muka said.
