2015 has clearly been characterised by several policies from the banking sector regulator that put a lot of banks on their toes. This made most of them to search for ways to sustain their earnings profile as well as to boost their capital.

Just as adverse developments in the international oil prices affected the country’s revenues and impacted negatively on reserves accretion capital flows, the Nigerian banking system was not left out as its performance was hobbled by the macroeconomic activities.

But the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) maintained that various stress-test conducted on the banks this year showed that the banking system remained stable with key stability indicators showing robustness. Although, the central bank continued to fine-tune demand management measures as well as implement appropriate supply-enhancing strategies to ensure effective demand and utilisation of foreign exchange in the country, complaints of dollar scarcity by businesses and banks was prevalent this year.
