This is a rebuttal to the post titled "Now That Crude Is Gradually Becoming Worthless, What Next For Niger Delta?" in the post the op along with some ill-informed folks were of the opinion that the Niger Delta will become economically irrelevant in a post-crude oil Nigerian economy. The ND will not only remain relevant it will still continue to be the most relevant region for the following reasons:
1.) Natural gas :Natural gas will likely become the next cash cow for Nigeria after crude. Nigeria has the 7th largest natural gas reserve in the world and most of these gas reserves are in the ND.
2.) Most of Nigeria's electricity is generated with gas so the entire nation will continue to depend on the ND for both domestic and industrial power needs.
3.) Local consumption of fuel, diesel and kerosene will still come from the ND. Nigeria consumes about 39.66 million litres of fuel per day. This is apart from diesel and kerosene. Without the ND other sections of the country will simply not be able to function economically because we all know that transportation is the artery of any economy.
4.) petrochemicals. People tend to forget that petrol and diesel are not the only products you get from petroleum. You also get petrochemicals which are used in various industries.
We only need to setup petrochemical plantsbin the ND.
