One of the key issues to understand about the role of advertising is that it plays a critical role in brand development and management. All of us have our understanding of what brand is. After all, we buy brands everyday.

My little definition of brand is a name, term, sign, symbol, or any other features that identifies one seller’s goods and services as distinct from those of other sellers.

Advertising plays significant role in brand management. A brand is in many ways the most precious business asset owned by a firm. It allows your firm to communicate consistently and efficiently with the market.

A brand can be put at a serious competitive disadvantage without effective communication provided by advertising. For every organization advertising affects brands development and management in five strategic ways.

1. Information and Persuasion: Target audiences learn about brands features and benefits through the message content of advertising and other brand promotional tools. Advertising has the capability to inform or persuade target audience about the value a brand has to offer. Analyst agree that branding is crucially important in the multi-billion cell phone market as Verizon, Sprint, T-mobile, compete for 250 million subscribers.

In much way, marketing and advertising a cellular service brand is much like marketing and advertising brand of bottled water.

2. Introduction of new brand or brand extension: Advertising is absolutely critical when organization introduce a new brand or extension of new brand to the market. Brand extension is the adaptation of an existing brand to a new product area.

3. Building and maintaining BRAND loyalty among consumer: loyalty to your brand is one of the most important assets your firm can have. Brand loyalty occurs when a consumer repeatedly purchase your brand and tell his or her family and friends. This loyalty can result because your brand name is prominent in your consumers memory

While brand features and benefits are the most important influence or building and maintenance of your brand loyalty, and advertising plays a key role in the process as well.

Advertising and integrated brand promotion often provides an extra incentive to consumers to remain brand loyal so advertising and integration of brand promotion is one the key factor that determines your costumer’s loyalty to your brand.

5 Building and maintaining brand loyalty within the trade: It might not seem if wholesalers, distributors, brokers, product promoters, would be brand loyal but they will favor one brand over other given the proper support from a manufacturer. Marketers can provide the trade with sale training programs, collateral advertising material, point of purchase advertising displays, premiums, traffic building special events.

Also, remember that trade buyers (retailers, wholesalers, distributors, brokers, content markers) can be a key to the success of a new brand and brand extensions. Marketers have little hope of successfully introducing a brand if there is know cooperation in the trade or promotional channels. Research also shows that retailer acceptance of a brand extension is key to the success of a new products.
