HISTORICAL EVENTS 1862 Lagos Island is annexed as a colony of Britain 1900 British protectorates of Northern and Southern Nigeria established 1901 Nigeria became a British Protectorate 1913 The Customs Departments of Northern and Southern Nigeria were amalgamated 1914 Northern and Southern Nigeria united in British colony of Nigeria 1947 The first pre-independence Constitution, the Richards Constitution became effective on January 1, 1947. 1947 Sonny Okosun, 'Ozziddi'musician, was born at Enugu. 1960 Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa becomes Nigeria's first Prime Minister 1963 The state of emergency imposed on the Western Region is lifted 1973 The naira was introduced, replacing the pound at a rate of 2 naira = 1 pound. Honestly, as a country, one can only wonder what we spent the last 50 Years doing.... We don't have much to show for a country that 'grew up' in the 20th century. Its saddening when you reflect on these issues. I can only hope at best, that this country gets better. Especially when you consider the present leadership. I'm awed..... |
