Diy: Assemble A Pvr For Your Dstv With Less Than N20k! Forget Multichoice Advert by princezino(m): 7:48pm On Oct 24, 2006
As an ardent SuperSports fan, I had always drooled over the Multichoice PVR adverts by Thomas Mlambo and co. Especially so since I couldn't justify to myself the added expense of buying the all new wonderful PVR Decoder and having to pay more than my usual N9K monthly,  Until i stumbled on a new but ridiculously easy idea.

Do you know that if you have a laptop (at least a P4 with 256Mb ram); [ofcourse you have to be a DSTv subscriber!) you can easily build a fully functional PVR decoder?! And you dont have to be a computer geek. I went to GAME Lekki and bought a new Digital TV Card (AverTV Hybrid+FM) for circa 16K. I then bought one AV cable (the type with red+yellow+white connectors). Installed the software that came with the TV card, slipped the card into the laptops PCMCIA slot, connected the cables to my DSTv decoder and voila! I had a PVR. I cannow Timeshift, record programmes when I'm off etc,

All who try this out can share thier ideas here,

Disadvantage: you can't use use your laptop the way it's meant to be used when you're using it as a PVR, and you know, laptops can be expensive!

Can you show us pictures of your PVR at work? Can your PVR record shows automatically?

Your ideas really work big time,

However there is only one disadvantage that i can not bring my whole family to gather and sit infront of a small 19inch laptop screen,

Are there any other ways of hetting a PVR like setup with a tv and a Free to Air decoder /receiver ?

Funny u'd most definitely spoil ur laptop and if u can afford to render a laptop into a video recorder then y can't u afford a DVR and not to talk about almighty NEPA

Oh Boy I give ur laptop 2 months to give up

Yeah, I have done it in the past during the last bba, but it is not 100% effective because sometimes, the computer may hang in the middle of an important recording. You can schedule a recording if you have a very good digital TV card like mine which is Lightwave USB TV/AV Combo. I think one would need a higher specifications lappy that doesnt come cheap. Like what some people said, my lappy did not last before it crashed. Now I am in a dilemma on what to do. I need another motherboard for my lappy which the cost is as much as buying a new laptop.

instead of using a laptop why not build a media center pc instead. Thats a cheaper alternative. If you have an Xbox you could also turn it into a media center by modding it.
