ALTHOUGH it had failed to pay the N780 billion fined by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) as at December 31, 2015, MTN Nigeria yesterday assured it does not envisage any disruption in its services in the country.

Besides, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) also stated yesterday that because of the court case filed by MTN Nigeria and its own counter motion, the two court cases supercede the deadline.

MTN, in response to The Guardian enquiry on the next line of action considering the deadline of yesterday, notwithstanding the court case, the telecommunications firm through its Public Relations and Protocol Manager, Funso Aina, responded, saying: “but as you know, when a case is in court, there is a limit to the comment that could be made, suffice it to say that based on the lis pendens rule (pending legal action) all parties are enjoined to restrain from taking further action until the matter is finally determined. This is consistent with previous judicial decisions in Nigeria.

“Notwithstanding the lawsuit, we will continue to engage with the Nigerian Authorities to try and ensure an amicable resolution in the best interests of the company, its stakeholders and the Nigerian authorities.

“We urge our customers not to panic as we do not envisage any disruption to our operations.”

MTN as at September 2015, controls 42 per cent market share and enjoys the services of 62.5 million subscribers in Nigeria, the largest of the Group.”

The question is what is giving MTN the boldness to disrespect a direct order from NCC?
