I often am at a loss on what to make of the hues and cries over Abiola's denied mandate. The Law of Karma seems to have caught up with him in that the military he aided to topple an elected president later on scuttled his presidential election. Any perceptive student of Nigeria's recent history would be aware that he was among the instigators, sponsors and supporters of the coup against Shagari. It is a fact that he nursed presidential ambitions under NPN and was displeased when made aware that such could not be granted in the short run. His struggle to claim his mandate could be viewed as the moves of a true democrat or moves by an individual to achieve a long-nursed ambition. I hold to the latter view.
