Bloody protest - Two killed, many injured as students protest -VC removed -Adekunle Ajasin varsity closed

Yinka Oladoyinbo, Akure - 19.06.2009

TWO people were, on Thursday, killed during a protest by the students of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, while two policemen and many other people sustained serious injuries.

The police station in the town was set ablaze by the irate mob that was protesting the killing of the first victim by the police deplored to restore sanity in the town.

Meanwhile, the Ondo State government has sacked the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Philip Abiodun, over the crisis.

Government has also ordered the closure of the institution while the students have been ordered to vacate the campus.

The students had, since Tuesday, commenced a peaceful protest to call for the commencement of their first semester examinations.

They also gave the university authorities 72 hours to make public the timetable for the examinations, saying that the examinations were long overdue.

The students had made bonfires on the major roads in the town, forcing Abuja-bound vehicles using the route to make a detour.

Eyewitness told Nigerian Tribune that the students had barely resumed the peaceful protest, when a top police officer in the area opened fire on an indigene of the town who was riding a motorcycle.

The okada rider was said to have died of the gunshot wound leading to a violent protest by other residents of the town who joined the students.

The irate mob was said to have proceeded to the police station located in the heart of the town and set it ablaze.

The mob was said to be heading towards a new police station on Supare Road when the anti-riot policemen that were called to reinforce security opened fire at the protesters and killed another indigene of the town.

Commercial activities were totally paralysed in the town as primary school pupils, secondary school students, market women and commercial motorists ran for safety with many shops hurriedly locked.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Charles Dawodu, stated that police officers were seriously injured by the protesters.

According to him, the protesters were armed with dangerous weapons, including AK-47 rifles with which they returned fire at the police.

Dawodu, however, said only one person was killed in the riot, adding that men of the command had restored order in the town.

The state government in a statement on the crisis said the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abiodun, was sacked in line with the White Paper on the recommendations of the Professor Tale Omole visitation panel into the affairs of the university.

The government, thereafter, announced the appointment of the oldest professor in the university, Professor Oladele Awobuluyi, as the acting vice chancellor. Awobuluyi, is a Professor of Linguistics.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC), Professor F. A. Oluwatelure, was also removed from office, was ordered to go back to his post as a professor in the Department of Psychology. The university’s bursar, Mr. Adesanoye Ojo Fasakin, was asked to proceed on retirement with immediate effect.
