Every year, the Amgen Scholars Japan Program provides selected undergraduate students with the opportunity to engage in a hands-on research experience at two premier Japanese universities. The Amgen Foundation has committed more than $50 million over twelve years to the global Amgen Scholars Program to make this opportunity possible for thousands of students.


Amgen Scholars Japan Program is open for world-wide students to undertake scientific research projects. Approximately 20 scholarships are available for undergraduate students to undertake scientific research projects at two premier Japanese universities (Kyoto University and University of Tokyo).

The Amgen Scholars Program provides hundreds of selected undergraduate students with the opportunity to engage in a hands-on research experience at many of the world’s leading educational institutions.

The Amgen Foundation seeks to advance science education, improve quality of care and access for patients, and strengthen the communities where Amgen staff members live and work. To date, the Foundation has donated over $200 million to local, regional, and international nonprofit organizations that impact society in inspiring and innovative ways.

Undergraduate students enrolled in colleges or universities with a three-year bachelor’s degree program must have completed at least two semesters of their studies prior to participating in the program. Applicants should have good working knowledge of English, demonstrated by a minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 79, or IELTS overall band score of 6.0, or the equivalent in principle.

List of Subjects: Depending on the host university, research areas may include Biochemistry; Bioengineering; Bioinformatics; Biopsychology; Biotechnology; Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering; Chemistry; Immunology; Medical Pharmacology; Microbiology; Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology; Molecular Genetics; Molecular Medicine; Molecular Pharmacology; Neurobiology; Neuroscience; Pathology; Physiological Psychology; Physiological Science; Statistics; and Toxicology.

Course Level: Scholarships are available to undertake undergraduate scientific research projects.

Scholarship for International Students: Yes, Scholarship is open to worldwide students.

Basic Eligibility Requirements: Amgen Scholars Japan Program applicants must be:
-Undergraduate students enrolled in colleges or universities worldwide that award a bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent); and
-Undergraduate students enrolled in four-year colleges or universities who are sophomores in their second year (with four quarters or three semesters of college experience), juniors in their third year, or non-graduating seniors in their fourth year (who are returning in the fall to continue their undergraduate studies).
Japan Program applicants must also have:
-A strong record of academic performance; and
-A good working knowledge of English, demonstrated by a minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 79, or IELTS overall band score of 6.0, or the equivalent in principle; and,
-An interest in pursuing a Ph.D.

Scholarship Cover: Each of the two Japanese host institutions has its own award.

Kyoto University
180,000 yen will be provided to Amgen Scholars.
Scholars will receive:
90,000 yen at the time of orientation (to be held on July 1)
90,000 yen from the International Student Mobility Division around July 31
Student will also receive accommodation, travel and health facilities

University of Tokyo
Rooms: Near-campus accommodation
Stipends: Amount varies depending on the location of the university / college that applicants currently belong to
Asia / Oceania: 450,000 JPY
Europe / North, Central and South America: 500,000 JPY
Africa / Middle East 600,000 JPY
Japan 300,000 JPY

application deadline for both institutions is in early February. Undergraduate students enrolled in colleges or universities with a three-year bachelor’s degree program must have completed at least two semesters of their studies prior to participating in the program.
