Nigerians, Pls Ask The President To Say Something On Bayelsa Guber Polls by OLADD: 8:20am On Jan 13, 2016
More than 48 hours after INEC's declaration of incumbent governor of Bayelsa State, Seriaki Dickson as winner of the rescheduled supplementary governorship election held on January 9, 2016, many Nigerians are yet to come to terms with the seemingly reluctance or outright refusal of the President to either congratulate the winner or perhaps, issue an official statement stating his reservation or otherwise on the exercise.

Many would recall the swift and prompt responses from the last president Goodluck Jonathan almost immediately after pronouncements of winners in any elections either at the Federal or State levels even when some of the results did not favour him or his party, the PDP.

Mr. President's muteness on the Bayelsa polls three days after completion of the exercise does not portray him as a true father of the nation and further lays credence to the generally held view of APC being a party of bad loosers. This brings to memory, Mr. President's negative dispositions and refusal to accept Presidential election results of 2003, 2007 and 2011.

Even if the President and his party hold reservation(s) about the conduct and outcome of the polls, it behoves on them in the spirit of sportsmanship, to express some level of maturity by acknowledging and accepting the facts that an election had been held, a verdict given and a winner had emerged.

No matter the perception of Nigerians towards Jonathan's presidency, the ex president would be remembered for entrenching some democratic culture and values which should serve as imitable templates in our nation's democratic journey. The culture of do-or-die politics or enmity-after-polls must be a thing of the past in Nigeria.

whether they congratule him or not is not an issue. Dickson will rule and serve his people because the bayelsans have spoken their minds through the polls.

You're right to some extent but Mr. President's statement will go a long way in dousing tensions, unite Bayelsans and further enrich our democratic values.

Try to read posts intuitively before commenting. The aims are explicitly stated therein.

I'm not sure why you expect him to congratulate Dickson. He has stayed out of all the state elections so far, why get involved now. In any case, I really doubt Dickson is wailing over a lack of congratulations from Buhari.

Buhari did not make hues about the alleged missing $2.8billion under his watch as a military head of state neither did he respond to the allegation of monumental(billions of naira) fraud that took place when he headed PTF until election period..

Kogi poll was a mess. Who will Buhari congratulate? The late Audu or the living usurper called Bello? My guy think now.

Aregbesola and Oshiomole (both of APC) did not wail before been congratulated by Jonathan and by extension, the PDP in the last dispensation. It's all in the spirit of sportsmanship.
