This days, most of secondary school leaver thought that electrical/Electronics Engineering is all about NAPA. That is a minute part of it, it is far more than that, before I deliberate on Electrical/Electronics Engineering, let us take a brief look at Engineering as a whole

First what is Engineering?
ENGINEERING is the discipline, the art, the skills and the
profession of acquiring and applying scientific,
mathematical, economical, social and practical knowledge
in order to design and build structures, machines, devices,
systems, materials and processes that safely realize
improvement to the lives of people. That is to say Engineers
are problem solvers, he uses those knowledge mentioned above to solve human’s problems. Some people do see Engineering and Technology as same, but they are different though similar.

HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNOLOGY AND
ENGINEERING
The historical development of technology and engineering by man has been more of a gradual process from primitive
technology of stones and stick to the present day high
technology of computer and space travel.
In (3500-1000BC) the discovery of the following metals
(copper, bronze, iron), bring a change in the
Engineering World. The use of metal was a great
improvement over the use of stones because they could be
shaped into any form and absorb larger forces, this led to
the discovery of the six machines in which modern
technology is based, they are
Wedge
Incline plane 
Pulley
Wheel
axle
Screw.
In the 19th century industrial revolution occur in Europe and North America, this was fuelled by the discovery of steam engine by the middle of the 18th century in England
with such engine many sophisticated machine were built.
Different technology develop include mining, shipping,
advance form of transportation, as time went on, electric motor was invented in 1821 by Michael Faraday, replaces
steam engine as the prime for many factories, steam turbine invented by Rudolph Diesel in 1893 replace steam engine as major power source for transportation.
Also at this time atomic principle was used to manufacture
atomic bombs, power generation from nuclear energy were
developing during this era. For precise control and
monitoring, many electronics devices were developed such
as ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) by Presper Eckert Jr and John Mauchy in the middle part of the 20th century.

In Nigeria, modern Technology and Engineering came with
colonisation and it gradually replace what was existing, the
colonialist built roads, waterway, bridges, railways all over
the country in addition, public utilities were establish

THE ENGINEERING FAMILY
The council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria
(COREN) recognises four cadres in engineering professional practice in Nigeria, they are
 Craftman/Artisans (Technical College)
 Technicians (OND Holders)
Technologist (HND Holders )
Engineers (B Eng Holders)
And the ratio of Engineer:Technologist:Technician:Craftman
is 1:2:4:8

 Environmental Engineering  Biomechanical Engineering, Control Engineering,Gas Engineering, Petroleum Engineering,
Now let focus a little on ELECTRICAL/Electronics Engineering.

What is Electrical/Electronics Engineering
Electrical/Electronics Engineering is concern with the
1. Design and development, testing a vast Electrical machine, generation, transmission and distribution of electrical power.
2. Design and manufacture of various communication
component and system such as radio, television, microwave systems, telegraph, telephone etc
3. Design of Electronic equipment and computer.

Therefore Electrical/Electronics Engineering is simply the
field of Engineering that deals with the study and application of electricity, electronic and electromagnetism. It became an identifiable occupation in the latter half of the 19th century, after the commercialization of electric telegraph, telephone and electric power distribution.

The first Electrical Engineer was William Gilbert who design versorium ( a device that detect the presence of statically charged object, he was the first to draw clear distinction between magnetism and static electricity and he was also credited with establishing the term electricity, in 1775 Alessandro Volta devise electrophorus (a device that produce static electricity). in1800 Volta develop the voltaic pile, a forerunner of the electric battery In the 19th century

 In 1827, George .S. Ohm quantified the relationship
between electric current and potential difference in a conductor.
 1831 Michael Faraday discovered electromagnetic
induction
 1873James Clark Maxwell published a unified theory of
electricity and magnetism
 1893 standardization of unit was done at Chicago, Volt,
Ampere, Coulomb, Ohm Henry and Farad was adopted.
 Thomas Edison built world first large-scale electrical
power network and switched it ON in 1882 those provide
direct current to 59 customers on Manhattan Island in New
York City.
 1885 Universities started to offer a bachelor degree in
Electrical/Electronics Engineering example of such schools
are Massachusetts institute of Technology, Cornell
University etc.
