Armed Policemen Invade Southern Ijaw Over Post- Election Violence by Monimatic(m): 9:17pm On Jan 16, 2016
There were noticeable tension in Bayelsa on
Saturday following the armed invasion of
the Peremabiri Ccommunity in Southern
Ijaw Local Government Area of the state by
over 200 armed policemen over alleged
cases of post-election violence and shooting
of the paramount ruler of the
community,Progress Neverdie.
The post-election violence in Peremabiri
community which has become subject of
controversy between loyalists of a frontline
ex-militant leader, Comrade Eris Paul also
known as General Ogunboss and the state
governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson, is
provoking fears among members of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
While concerned indigenes of the Peremabiri
community absolved the ex-militant leader,
Ogunboss of blame and denied any political
undertone to the crisis, the loyalists of the
state governor, Hon. SeriKe Dickson are
alleged to have resolved to hold the ex-
militant leader responsible due to his
political affiliation strong stance against the
re-elevtion of the governor.
Sources within the Peremabiri community
on Saturday confirmed that the combined
team of combatant marine police, mobile
policemen and men of the state owned
special cecurity outfit known as Door
Akpoor.
It was gathered that the arrival of the armed
security men at about 10am on Thursday,
provoked fear among indigenes with many
running away to neighbouring communities.
The armed men, dressed in black, came to
the community in four gun boats and armed
with heavy weapons.
A community elder, Rowland Kiente and the
member of the Community Development
Committee(CDC), Keepwell Isiah, confirmed
the development by telephone, describing it
as an unwanted invasion.
Comrade Keepwell Isiah said tbe move by
the state government and the Nigerian
Police is unwelcome and political.
“Though the communal misunderstanding
that led to the injury against the Paramount
Ruler has been settled, the invasion has led
to our people running out. This is a peaceful
community and if we want police
protection,we would have called for it,” he
said.
Contacted on the development, the
spokesman of the Bayelsa Police Command,
Asimin Butswat, confirmed that the
deployment of marine police and mobile
policemen to the community, but said it was
on the request of the indigenes.
“You know we have been witnessing some
disturbances in the community for some
time. And the police responded by deploying
some personel to arrest those found
culpable in the crisis rocking the community.
It is a rescue mission to arrest those ex-
militants accused of perpetrating violence in
the Community,” he added.
